I replaced my door hinge pins a couple months back. I was so proud. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I seemed to have done a good job. Everything went back where it was supposed to, no parts left over, and now the door closes and latches tight with one finger from six inches! It used to require a couple of hard slams...from Jose Canseco!

But I forgot something. Something important. Can you guess what it was? Today I noticed a new sound. "Squeeeek-squeek". Every time I open the door. "Squeeeek-squeek". Even I figured it out. "Squeeeek-squeek". Grease! I forgot to lubrcate the pins! My first mechanical repair on this Fiero, too. Oh, the shame!

Ignoring for the moment that I'm going to have to take the ^%##$@ pins out again to lube them, here's my technical question for you gurus: What kind of grease should I use? Excluding olive oil, Vaseline, and whatever my hair seems to produce naturally, I have the following lubricants on hand: Motor oil, dielectric grease, white lithium grease, and WD-40. Not "can I use any of these", but rather "should I use any of these"? I'm not allergic to going out and buying something. What is the GM-annointed, expert recomended lubricant for door hinge pins?

I'm going to feel foolish if someone tells me that "Johnson's Door Hinge Pin Grease" is found in isle seven of my local Napa store.

Please don't post and tell me "I used beeswax" or "I heard about a guy who knew someone who rubbed a bar of soap on his". I want to know what I'm SUPPOSED to use here. (Although, I guess what I was SUPPOSED to use was a qualified mechanic!)

Thanks!

I use a little Break Free every few months for the same reason as above. You can get it at Wal-Mart or about any auto parts store. The name is actually BreakFree CLP (Cleaner, Lubricant, Penatrate or something like that). At Wal-Mart, if it is not back in hardware you should be able to find it back in Sporting Goods.

Thanks guys, but I've heard that spray lubricants are the mortal enemy of new paint. Something about "fish-eye". I'm going to be doing some painting on the kick panels, and would hate to fix one thing only to break another.

Any truth to this?

White lithium grease? Or even brake grease. Something that won't wash away easily.
But they do need periodic lubrication - just try to lube them without taking them apart and see how that goes.

Anything with silicon in it, like WD-40. If you're going to be doing any painting, wipe down the area really well with a rag SOAKED in laquer thinner.

Good answers above on your squeek.

Regular 30 wt. automotive oil would work nicely. I wouldnt bother with penetrants as they are too thinly filmed for such a heavy duty application. Just use one of those little oil can squirters to dispense the oil. Oh, and make sure to wipe away the excess as motor oil tends to attract dirt like a magnet.

The "official" lube is GM Lubriplate "A".

As far as I can tell (I've used the actual product BTW) it's just white lithium spray lube.
And applied properly, you don't even need to pull the pins out. It comes out of the can almost like water, then the carrier evaporates and it solidifies.

I use the white lithium for door mechanicals.
like someelse said, the WD-40 is way to light, the motor oil is probably a bit light also.
I think CV joint grease would be the ideal thing - very resistant to washing away.
