I have to change my water pump on me 86SE(230k orginal) and figured I'd check some threads in case there was something odd about it. It's pretty much the normal 660 water pump replacement.

But one thing I noticed was people taking about Torx bolts being used. My two 86 Fiero engines, the one 85 Fiero engine and all of my MPFI X-11 engines were the standard hex-head bolts.

Did some of the engines come with Torx? Maybe it was a later change? In production, Torx are great so I can understand why they might have done it but it seems they wouldn't have stopped there. There are lots of opprotunities for Torx.

Not that it matters at this point, I'm just curious because I have never seen a 660 iron head with Torx bolts for the water pump.

My 87 has them as well. I prefer std hex head bolts to hold the water pump but the torx were probably used to save money and/ or assembly time. Those bolts have a tendency to corode and snap so tap the heads and spay them with penetrant before removing them. You will find that replacing a water pump in a Fiero is a royal PITA. However, if you remove the wheelhouse liner access becomes easier. Upon assembly use stainless steel bolts as they will last much longer. Also don't forget a bit of sealant on the threads to prevent a leak.

My 87GT had TORX as well on the water pump. My 86' 2m4 has hex. I guess it's a later year thing they went to.

BTW, not to jack the thread or anything, but was TORX a GM invention? I thought so but wasn't entirely sure?

Starting to sound like it was an 87 model year change.

Took about 2 hours. It was a tad easier in my X-11 (same engine) but it went smooth. The patient is being moved to recovery now.
