I guess I thought you were including the 3K for the Fiero in your 5K estimate. No biggie.

Sounds like you have put more thought into it and have more resources than I initially thought.

Glad I could help on the rotation thing - with a project like this, that's probably all the help I can be.

Good luck with it!

I had an idea about the tranny pollock!.

Providing that i might have the room to do this, i can rip out the trunk, take out the rar seats, and place the 3000GT engine in forwards, and have the tranny go towards the back, then i can use the Rear Pumpkin out of the 3000GT chassis, and custom up some axle lengths, and fit the 3000GT rear end in where the drive-axles would be for the Original Fiero setup. I would also have the Fab shop make me up a custom SHORT driveshaft, so that it would almost be directly into the rear Pumpkin.

That would solve my tranny problem, and maybe even my drivetrain problem, minus fitting everything up to the suspension and undercarriage. It would probably cost me an extra 1000$ bucks altogether, but i can manage. I'll have enough money saved up by the time that i get to the drivetrain area, I'll be very busy customizing the Engine mounts and fitting the engine in....

Give me some thoughts and ideas on that

Thanks

The Subaru would still be easier and cheaper. Plus I think it would handle better than any other high power options out there.

um... fieros don't have rear seats. I believe that is what you meant when you said "rar seats". It is just a two seater.

Lol, FieroFun, as you can see, I still have much too learn about the car. But I think i have found a car where i live that i can buy, so i can stop assuming stupid things about the car, and start seeing it for myself. We all learn. But I guess I'll end up building a custom sheet metal+Firewall combo after I have the engine in place.

I kind of agree with you Electron, but from also being part of a Subaru Forum (I own a MY05 Impreza 2.5RS) I read up on horro stories of the internals of the engine not being able to hold much HP over stock, and the first 2 years of STi Tranny were weak. Plus, 6 cylinders will almost always beat 4 cylinders, even if they are same HP. I said ALMOST too, there are exceptions.

TY for the correction haha.

P.S. Pollock, hit me up if ya have any input on my proposed Tranny/engine solution.

Sounds VERY interesting. Id be very interested in seeing more pics of this in progress, or completed!

What gave you the idea to go with an import motor? Did you forget about the Grand National with a turbo V6? How about a supercharged 3800 - ive seen them running p-r-e-t-t-y quick in a Fiero!!! Not to mention im sure that you could take a N* and if the 11's isnt fast enough, you can put a turbo on that... im sure it would be in the 4 second 0-60 area

Anyway, good luck, and I hope all goes well with the swap!

ok i said that i had an idea for you so let me run this by you. you said you like nissan and good on you for that. this is a picture of a skyline and how the drivetrain is laid out in the car. if you are already know all this i am sorry i dont mean to insult you.

the area in red is the trans
the green is the drive shafts going to the rear diff
orange rear dii
yellow = drive shaft to the front diff
blue= the area where the front diff should be
now i was going to use this idea in a lambo kit car but they normally use two different size tires front to rear and it wouldnt look right to have a lambo with the same size tires all the way around, so i was thinking of doing this with my fiero when i get back to the U.S. so your project will give me ideas to work off of. basicly take this setup and turn it around so that the transmission points the other direction and mount it in the rear of the car in the area of the gas tank. then mount the two differentals in the respective areas. this setup works only if you flip the differentals over. this tends to reverse the 1 forward/ 6 reverse gears thing that happens when you turn a trans around. this setup should give you most of the benifets of a mid engine AWD without upsetting the close 50/50 weight distribution of the fiero , the only thing that will keep it really throw it off wack is that you will need to move the gas tank. the other nice things about this trans setup is that the transfer unit at the end is torque splitting so it will transfer power from front to rear as needed for traction. also its my understanding that the transfer unit will bolt to the end of the trans used in the 300z so you could get a 300z trans to start this setup started, but let me double check.now for the best part the actual skyline trans can handle 600 - 1000 hp depending on which one you get and they come in a 6 speed flavor.

that covers the majority of the setup i was going to use myself, the only problems i can forsee without having any of the parts or a car infront of me is the shifter and how to get power to the front wheels

the only thing i can think of for the shifter is some kind of coustom linkage other wise you will have a shifter that is about 12 - 18 inches farther back than a stock fiero and a shift patern that would look like this

6 4 2

5 3 1 r

i thinkwell i think i have talked enough for one day i need to get ready for work ill talk a little later on the rest of my idea

For a brief period of about 18 hours, you had me convinced that you were on the right track. Then you said something about removing the back seat from a Fiero, and putting what amounts to a front engine/RWD drive train in the ass end of it.

I am again convinced that you are spiraling out of control, hehe.......

Please, for the sake of all our collective sanity, limit your drivetrain search to established transverse-mounted engines and FWD-style transaxles that are at least made by the SAME COMPANY.

Ehh, pollock, I'm just playing around with ideas. I know I sound insane, but I'm open to any ideas, good or bad. I found a Fiero i am going to buy, so once i have it (hopefully 2morrow actually) I am gonna start measuring things up, and personally finding ou how this thing works. Once i have a hands on experience with the way that the car is built, I'll be able to figure out how to do things alot better.

And Japfiero, Your idea is very intriguing, minus the AWD part. I own AWD, it friggin rox, but it will be SOOOO much more hassle for me to make this car AWD than to just plop the engine in and power the rear.

The idea about flipping the differentials is great! Assuming that it works. That would mean that i could flip the engine around like you said, and assuming it has a driveshaft going to the front (like the engine diagram above), I can use just the front driveshaft and power the rear, through an offset differential/axle rear end. Problem is, making up (or finding) a rear end that is offset like that, that will also fit the Fiero's rear-end fairly comfortably.

Of course, the only Skyline Engine i would use is an RB26DETT, as expensive as they are. I'll research some other AWD platforms, and see if they have a similar Drivetrain.

If none of these ideas work, I'm gonna have to look into getting the 3rd Gen 3SGTE engine from the MR2-S (also known for being in the GT-4 Celicas) It's a respectable 260HP, with a good tuning market, just not nearly as goos a market as the Skyline or the 3000GT VR-4 market.

Thanks for the help guys, Feeling like a retard on a forum is better than feeling like a retard AFTER I buy stuff haha.

P.S. Yea, my bad on the seats once again, I'm assuming it had some earlier, which it doesn't, sorry lol

One of the TommyKaira cars from Japan is a custom made carbon fibre chassis with exactly that... reversed Skyline drivetrain, I assume with flipped diffs. Not sure how they handle the torque distribution, because the Skyline is primarily RWD and transfers torque forward under adverse conditions. Flipped without reprogramming the T-case controlled, it would be primarily FWD, transferring torque rearward only when necessary.

I have three suggestions.

1. MR2 engine/transmission combination.
2. SR20 Front wheel drive imported from Japan(out of Japanese Pulsar)
3. Eclipse engine/transmission(there are a few mounted in Fieros almost ready to run)

Keep in mind that by replacing the engine and transmission, you don't need to worry about the electronics. The only concerns you would have would be fuel pump. The guages could be made to work by going aftermarket, or switching to the donor vehicles guage cluster(lets face facts, the fiero's is ugly anyway)

none of this is cheap by the way.

Not to sound mean or flame you or anything, but, you sound like you need to put off the research on your engine/tranny for a little bit and do some research on the Fiero. When you asked about the trunk, I thought, well...yeah...I guess that most people don't know that the trunk is back there. But then you said you were going to remove the back seats?? Spend some time looking through this forum and other places, and find out more about Fieros - how they work, how they are setup, and maybe even what one looks like (you probably already know this, but maybe not ).
You are going to have to know some info about the car first, then go back to working on your project.

Inline 6 = will not fit even longitudinal. The engine is just to damn long. Unless you plan to streatch the fiero, it ain't happening.

Hi Guys
Don't mean to burst you bubble on subaru, But they just don't have the power of even the stock Fiero Motor, I was looking at putting the new twin Turbo in my 87 GT, As my mate imports the complete engines from Japan, Have any of you driven them,?? you need to wind them out to about 4500 rpm before they even start to feel like they are pulling ,I have lined the new twin turbo WRX up, and guess what the Stock 87 Fiero with a performance chip beat him over a basic backroad 1/4 mile, all he could do was complain about Turbo lag, and how long it took him to get going, In my opinion the Subaru motors need to be driven around town at 5000rpm, to feel like you are having fun, At least a V6 fiero when squirted off from a idle of 1000rpm at the lights quite happily smokes tyres if you floor it, Bugger sitting there reving the ring out of a 4 cylinder trying to get it to go when the light turns green, You fiero drivers out there who own a V6 should know what the sound and feel of a V6 is to a 4 cylinder,
So after all that i am quite happy to stay with a V6

Cheers
Scorpion

I hate to break it to you, but your friend is incompetent.
I've driven a friend's mostly stock WRX as well as my '87 GT. Stock for stock the WRX is WAY faster and WAY easier to control at the limit. Now if you've got some healthy mods on your '87, then things might be slightly different.
