Anyone stuff say a P400 in the front trunk area to play MP3's via a cassette adapter in the stock radio yet?, Numerical kepyad in the console?, Irman IR remote?, Havent seen any posted here and I was thinking that the Fiero is a great candidate for a system like that.., Heck it could control quite a few other "things" in the car too..
Shoot Joe Torma an PM, I belive he is or has done something along those lines. He's pretty sharp on this stuff and might be able to throw a few pointers your way.

Search Google for mini-itx. these little boogers are only 1.2 Ghz, but uber small. You can easily fit that in the stock radio space. Then use a Xenarc 700TS touch screen to fill the gap.
I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but no cash! LOL
And why would you want to route through the tape adapter?? If you're that cheap just buy a PDA and play mp3 through the adapter. (mounting a computer in your car will be out of your budget LOL)

Why not just buy an mp3 deck for the car? It's a lot cheaper... I only paid $110 for it and the 1.5 din adaptor plate thing. That's what I have in mine and 260 songs seems to be more than enough for me to listen to.
the cheapest thing to do is buy a iPod (or similiar not so cool mp3 player... I'm a mac:ie, what can I say) Then get one of those FM transmitters, iTrip for example (http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/itrip/ )
Hook it up and play mp3 tunes to your cars own radio. Super smooth, you can bring your mp3 player with you when you're not in the car, and best of all... no wires and compatible with all models!
Or just replace the stock system with a phat one!

I'd really like to see car radios haveing a USB port, so you can just stick in any USB storage device, and play whatever MP3's might be on it. anything from a 128k memory stick to a full on USB hard drive. USB & the file format are pretty universal, should be an easy function to add.

I'm using a progressive scan DVD player (CyberHome CH-DVD-300 - I bought two unit for $19ea.) The one in my van feeds the audio into a stock Infinty system thru a cassette adaptor. The one in my Corson Spyder ('86 Fiero) is fed into the CD changer inputs on a Sony AM-FM Cassette Receiver. I use Infinty Kappa 693i's in a modified dash, Kappa RS63's in the doors and two pair of Kappa 32.5cf' in the headrests - all powered with Alphasonik MOS-Fet amps. I, also, have a JL Audio subwoofer that fits in the passenger footwell, but it, really, isn't necessary with those huge 693i's (My wife has long legs and I have to remove the subwoofer for her to ride in comfort.) A seven inch LCD monitor and DVD remote control allow me to operate the player with ease. I can play upto 4.7GBs of JPG, MPEG, WAV, MP3, CD+G or MP3+G (Karaoke) and/or DVD files. The average MP3 file is about 3MB. A DVD holds 4,700 MBs. That's more songs than most folks have in their entire collection.
