Can any one tell me what the original firewall insulation was on my 87 Fiero Coupe with a 4 Cyl? Right now I got nothing but about half inch of some type of falling apart black insulation not doing much good. Was there a heat shield with insulation behind? Any place I can get something close to the original?

I don't think you would want to go back to the original fiberglass junk the factory put in. There is a much nicer alternative though. best of all it's not very expensive, it's easy to do and looks great when your finished.

West Coast Fiero also has a foil backed insulation piece with the wiring harness holes precut. It looks nice but may be priced a a bit above $100. Check with them for the latest pricing.

I used a ceramic spray on coating called Lizard Skin. It can be watered down, with water actually, to be able to put in a spray gun and just spray on. It is non-toxic and watwer clean up. I did the engine bay and it will provide better insulation than the batting insulation as well as reduce sound up to 17 decibels. It is recomended to use it in wheel wells as well as on the tub floor as it will really help sound proof the car all over as well as keep the heat out.

You spray on 3 coats or so which ends up being about the thickness of a credit card or a bit thicker and let it dry over night. You go in the naxt day and can sand it smooth for a nicer finish or keep the slightly rippled finish it has when dry and then paint it any colour you want. I ended up just painting mine black but you can use any colour you want. A lot of rod and custom shops use it as they can sand and paint the same colour as the rest of the bay or car for a nice finish.

I don't know what it costs in the States or where to get it but it is not cheap in Canada but worth it in my opinion. My engine bay came out quite nice.

Cheers
Don

"Lizard Skin"

A liquid ceramic thermal insulation and acoustic sound dampening spray-on coating.
Why you need it?
Ever drive in a big horsepower musclecar in the summer with no A/C? It's too hot. It's too loud. Now you can kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Lizard skin forms a moisture barrier, yet remains flexible through extreme temperatures (-45 to 500 degrees F).

Applications: Interior and exterior of any vehicle

MSRP $185 for 2 gallons, good for up to 4,500 square feet.

I found it really easy to put on as well. Don't be afraid to water it down to whatever you need to work in the spray gun without clogging it.

When I opened the containerit was pretty hard on top and I thought I had a bad batch or expired but I phoned the rod shop and they said; "Just water it down until you have the consistency you want and away you go." I did that and it worked great. It will always end up with a bit of a hard top layer but it just needs stirring with one of those elctric drill stirring attachments and some water to loosen it up.

I am going to do the interior floor panels as well in the next little while as I am redoing th einterior next. I'll take pics.

Thanks for all your replies regarding the firewall insulation. You guys (and Gals) have been great. I think I'll go with the West Coat Fiero option. Thanks again.

Don:

I sent a PM asking where you purchased the Lizard Skin from. However, if you have extra I would be willing to buy some from you, I don't think that I need 2 gallons worth. Let me know.

Thanks
Nolan

Heres a picture of the firewall insulation that fieroX was selling a while ago. I bought the precut firewall shield and then i bought some extra material because i covered the trunk wall behind the muffler to keep the trunk cooler.

I paid about $75.00 for a 4'x25' roll from J.C. Whitney, Silver face, composite insulation, about 1/2" thick. I laid the old insul. over the top, marked it with a Sharpie and cut it out. I used spray contact cement to attach it to the firewall. I also insulated the trunk since one of the mufflers is very close to the trunk wall. Seems to be working really well, and the foil face looks good and is easier to keep clean than the fiber stuff from the original insulation. I still have enough of the roll left to do 3 or 4 more firewalls.Whitney sells the product in 4x6' pieces, too.
