Purchased an 86 SE in U.S. and want to swap in a speedo from Canada that reads in km/h. I presume I have to swap in an ECM from Canada as well. Will the new ECM adjust it self to the new car even though there are minor differences in the guage arrangements as well? The ECM I have in mind comes from an 86 SE as well but it had the aux guage set up and the one I want to swap it into does not and thus has no alt. guage like the donor.
The Metric and Imperial unit speedos both have both sets of units on them. You can even keep the same speedo and just change the face to the metric unit face.

If I remember correctly, the "calibration" is accomplished via the spacing of the tick marks and numbers on the gauge face, not the ECM. So you should be able to swap in a metric speedo with no problems... as long as it's a Fiero speedo.

The ECM doesn't give a rats ass about what gauge you have. The only thing it cares is that it sees the correct pulses per mile. That I'm aware of the ECM reads miles no matter what the dash is labeled.

If you look at the wiring setup on the stock speedo system - the signal fron the VSS goes to the speedo circuit board at 4000 pulses/mile then it goes to the ECM at 2000 pulses/mile. All Fiero speedometers work on the 4000 PPM signal

A further Q on this subject. What about the Odometer will it just start recording kms instead of miles?
yes, the VSS is 4000 pulse per mile even on the metric units. The speedo converts that either into MPH and Miles or KPH and Km, depending on how it's setup.

Ok that sounds reasonable now here's another. I want to change the numbers on the odometer to reflect the switch from miles to kilometers. For example the car has 78000 miles which translates into 125000 kilometers the odometer I would swap in says 160000 therefore I want to alter the numbers is this doable?
