You have to remove the steering wheel, then take the nut off the steering shaft, remove the black plastic beauty ring, remove the steering wheel lock ring and circlip ( you will have to get a tool from aany autoparts store to relieve pressure from the spring behind the lockring so that you can pry out the circlip), remove the horn contact ring, then you will take the 3 screws from the turn signal switch and one screw from the turn signal stalk extention and then remove the extention and pull out the turnsignal switch from the steering column housing a few inches ( it wont come out all the way unless you disconnect the wiring to it) but it will come out far enough to be able to get to the torx screws behind it. Then you remove the torx screws, remove the two gold colored terminal clip that covers the torx screw pin that holds the ignition switch key tumbler in. Then you remove the torx screw pin, pull out the key tumbler from the side of the housing, then the black housing will come out so you can remove the turn signal stalk. If you have cruise control then you will have to unplug the wiring to it by removing the kicker panel below your column to access the connector and then you have to pull it up from through the groove that it goes through along the side of the steering column

edit: duh ..I've had along day

Not necessary if you just want to change the stalk. Grab it and pull straight out toward the outside mirror. Even if you have cruise, you can still remove the stalk and cruise wire by unhooking the wire under the column and pulling the stalk out. Don't pull the wire out but a few inches. Cut your old wire off the stalk, Tie your new wire on to the old one, and use the old wire to pull the new wire down the column. Then just push the new stalk in. At least that's how it's supposed to work.

Unless of course 88's are different from 84s.

From Oliver Sholtz:

"The prime suspect if your cruise control is non-operative is the cruise control stalk. The switches in the head module go into the one wire that runs down the steering column. You don't need a special tool to check it. Just disconnect the connector at the steering column and plug in a known good switch. This one can be from almost any GM car from the eighties, I use a switch from a Fiero with the wiper-washer portion broken. Plug it into the harness and go for a test drive. If the cruise works now, you need a new stalk. Since the connector is already disconnected, tie some cable to it and yank the stalk straight out of the steering column. Pull it all the way out and use the cable you tied to the connector to feed the new stalk's wire through the column. The new stalk easily snaps into place. Hook it up and you're all set. The original part is discontinued, but GM makes a replacement stalk that works just fine. The part number is 2511 1290."

Well damn theres that way too ..LOL but I suppose it depends on if your replacing the entire turn signal stalk assembly or just the stalk itself ...BTW I just had to remove my whole column today due to my ignition switch pushrod breaking! Thats my excuse for making it sound so complicated ..got too wrapped up in it

This is how I've always done it! There is no difference between '84s and '88s.....they're all the same.

To be honest, it isn't always a piece of cake like it sounds. The 1st time I did it, I ended up taking the column partially apart because the wire kept hanging up somewhere. 2nd time I had to do it, it went like clockwork.

Ign switch pushrod failure?? Kinda unusual isn't it?

Yeah I've never seen this happen before in a GM column. In order to fix it you would have to disassemble another column to get the part, unless GM sells them and even then you have still to take the column pretty much apart to fix it. Its much easier if you have a spare column to just replace the broken one in this instance. Of course the part is made out of potmetal so theres no repairing it. Its the curved seat part of the toothed rack that the ign key tumbler gear ingages, not the actual pushrod, but it does engage the pushrod via the curved seat.

I know what you mean as far as the stalk repair. I've had to do the same thing because the connector on the cruise control wiring would hang up somewhere along its path inside thew column housing so I had to pull the wheel in order to fix it. Plus the stalks are notoroius for having the wiper paddle break and the cruise wiring wear out

All of the steering column components are available through GM dealers. This is where the theft recovery guys go for parts.
