225/50/16 is too wide for a 6" rim

Is it a 4 cyl coupe or a V6?

What rims are they? Grand Am or another OEM wheel?

That's interesting then why do they put them on most GM W-body's ?

At least they are on my Grand Prix STE and a spare set of Bonneville SSE rims.

My mistake... (I just looked it up to verify)

A 6" rim is the smallest width you can put a 225/50/16 on.

Warden, you could do the following......

205/55/16 on front
225/50/16 on rear

225/50/16 is what I have on a set of 16x6 wheels. Check with the manufacturer for min. widths. I have Kuhmos and the 225 will fit on the 6" width, but the Coopers I was looking at required a 6.5" rim.

I really like the 225/50/16 I have and they hold the road great.

I've been through this with 16x6 and 16x7 rims. I've run several sizes on both rims for a couple hundred thousand miles.

I found that overall, 16x6 should be a 205 or 215 tire. 235's or larger are too big but 225's are "acceptable".

For the 16x7 I ran 225's and I think that is the limit. 245 and larger are too big.
235's are acceptable.

Aspect ratio is really driven by height limitations (do you plant to run chains? Will they clear the strut?). I run 50's or 55's. 60's if you can handle the height unless you can give up some ride quality. 50's transmit much more road roughness than 60 series.

For the Fiero, I am using 16x6 rims with 215/50-16's. I think that works the best, wears nicely and doesn't look silly on the rim. It's also close to the stock 215/60-14 height.

If you want wider, get a wider rim.

TK

Edit: I corrected the upper limits (IMHO). I know people will try to run a 295 on a 5" rim.

What the hell.. 225 max on a 6'' rim ? Why does that seem so wrong to me.. We used the stock 67' FORD rim on my fathers fairlane.. It was about a 6.5" rim or so and we got a 245 on it quite easily.. Perhaps the tires are different? Etc - profile , 60 series to a 50? Who knows..

Yes. Because the 67 Ford had a VERY tall tire.

Tire makers know, the specs are available to the public on any tire.

The lower you go in profile, and the large diameter the wheel is, the less section width you can put on it.

Every tire has it's specs, all are pretty much the same among all makers, few differences.

225/50/16 is designed for a 7" rim and operating range is 6" to 8"

You should always try to get it as close to the designed width as possible. I personally wouldn't run a 225/50/16 on a 6" rim because I think it would be too buldgy looking. Have to remember your pushing maximum tire on minimum rim.
