I am having a Brain Fart. Fuel line fittings, do you use Teflon Tape or a different sealer?

Nothing is required... assuming they are flaired fittings.

Technically, Teflon tape is not a sealer... it's just a lubricant anyway.

the teflon tape is called "teflon thread dope tape" - its a void filler - thanks to its chemical resistance the only time to absolutely not use it is when you need a good electrical connection and even then its usually fine as long as you don't over-do it

its also not always necessary

On the stock Fiero fuel rail (I'm guessing this is for 4.9 or non stock though), there is an O-ring that seals the lines, and the threads do nothing as far as sealing, they just hold the fitting against the o-ring.

I would say you sholdn't need it on other 'stock' style fittings as well...

Your right it is a 4.9 swap and for the fuel pressure regulator fittings.

You can get pipe dope that will act as a lubricant that has no teflon in it at all. if you are talking about using actual teflon tape (rolled spool), then I would say do not use it. As you tighten the fitting over the pipe, the pieces of teflon could get into the fuel line and could clog it up. It is posible to use the tape if you use it right and keep the tape away from the edge of the threads.

My opinion is if you want to use something that you use a pipe dope compound that does not have teflon pieces in it.

I have the tape on the shelf already and I only tape the last 1/2 of the threads anyhow. I am threading a barb into the regulator.

yeah always keep the tape away from the end of the peice being threaded in - its good to leave the first couple rows bare

Tape (or any sealer) is not for flared lines or O-ringed fittings, they are assembled dry. It is for pipe fittings.

You likely can use it and may not hurt anything, but if a piece gets into the fuel rail it will likely plug and injector.

As long as the teflon is only applied back on the flare nut threads, it shouldn't be a problem.
I've seen lots of fuel lines over the years ruined when the nut wouldn't back out and the hex stripped off, or worse--the line twisted with the nut. All the teflon in the world won't help a deformed and leaking flare and will cause big problems--as Electrathon indicates above.

Teflon tape has been around a looooong time, and tho it's still used often, it's kinda old technology.
There are probably better compunds out there nowdays, to put both on the threads and on the line where the nut rests, to prevent corrosion between the line and nut, and to aid in removal of the nut later..
