Has anyone used Rust Bullet, and what were your impressions of it?

I used it as a temporary "fix" this winter on 2 cars and wasn't overly happy with the result. It looked nice when applied, but it seems with Michigan weather, the rust is coming through it over a month's time. Wanted to see if others were happy and maybe I did something wrong prep-wise. Basically, sanded, then painted.

Also, wanted to see whst your favorite rust-proofing coatng would be for another project of mine. It's a previously painted surface, with only small sections of rust. I love POR-15 for completely rusted surfaces, but this surface also has been painted before, so it doesnt have much "tooth". I want something as a preventative, but that will bond well with previously painted surfaces, versus stripping down to bare metal

Thanks

Hmm... I painted some rather rusted pieces with just a good wire-brushing, and it doesn't seem to have rusted through yet.. They're kind of hidden though, so I'd have to take a good look to really check. Then again, I also painted over the Rust Bullet with a top coat of Rustoleum black.. May help, I dunno... Some rusted metal that I ground down and sanded, then painted with POR-15 is rusting through. Kind of PO'd about that... Then again I didn't buy the "metal ready" stuff they also sell to prep the area.. I seem to remember the Rust Bullet stuff going on a bit better, like it flowed into the rust a bit more than the POR did.. Just my thoughts!

Hmm. I wonder.

I did not topcoat mine. Just plain rust-bullet. 2 coats. It's also on the exterior of the car, in the elements. Seems like it should last more then a month or so though.

How'd the Rustoleum last.. looks-wise?

POR-15, I've never had rust through, but I have had it peel off painted surfaces. I always used the metal ready though. I did notice, if you use too much metal ready.. eg dont get it completely clean, the POR peels.

Anyone tried Eastwood's Rust roofing product?

The rustoleum stuff still looks pretty good.. It is / was a semi-gloss black I think.. I did the wheel wells, the rear metal bumper, the rear frame rails, and the rear bumper support "ledge" with the Rust Bullet / rustoleum.. I did some of the inside of the engine compartment with the POR. I did notice that it peels on a painted surface also. I didn't top-coat the POR, it's bare in the engine compartment. Where it's rusting through is above where the battery tray would be. So that may have had something to do with it also, the nice outgassing of the battery and all.. Maybe there was still some corrosion going on in the metal that the metal-ready would have killed....

I may try the rustoleum as a top coat to save a few $$. I was initially going to use the rust bullet, then cover it with POR's Chassis-coat black. It's just costly, and in certain areas probably overkill. I also think the combination of the POR or Rustbullet type paint, then the enamel over it may be double protection, since you're using dual products.

i may try the Eastwood rust killer also. Kinda of a a "real world" test.

Thanks for the replies!!
