Is the cruise module supposed to be under the carpet on the 84 like the rest? Can't find it.

No, on the 84 it's integrated into the speedometer circuit card in the instrument cluster.

Where does the spade looking connector from the stalk plug into?
Intergrated into the circuit board huh?
Wow-this is a first. It's not often Oliver Sholtz is mistaken. From Fiero Sails/Fiero Secrets:

"First, the Fiero used two fundamentally different approaches to the cruise control. The 1984-1986 4 cylinder and all V6 Fieros use a separate cruise control module. It is located behind the carpet on the driver side center console. To access it you need to remove the radio console and flip the carpet aside."

As best as I can recall, on my 84 it plugged into the wiring harness near the steering column.

This sounded fishy to me to but I checked it out and sure enough the 84 cruise control module is integrated into the speedometer board on the 84.

The connector that plugs directly into the bottom of the speedometer board, which the 84 Helms calls C204 has 18 cavities. In later years only 5 of them are active, (T-power, P-ground, S-VSS hi, R-VSS lo, and U-VSS to ECM. In 84 5 more pins are used, D (cruise on input) L (cruise clutch sw - manual or brake sw- auto), M (cruise set), G (resume). THe Multi lever plugs in at C235 which is described as being on the left side of the steering column.

I hope that helps.

So that means problems if a later instrument panel has been switched into an 84. I'll have to look at this a bit.

Huh, I didn't know that about the 84 cruise. Learn something new everyday. While i'm here looking like an idiot , are all 84 speedo's the same, or is there a cruise specific one?

If you want your cruise to work in your 84 then you are either going to have to stick with the 85 MPH speedometer and use the stock 84 board, or make a special harness to use both speedometer boards, (84 for cruise and later years board for speedometer).

People say the speedometers are plug and play for all years, but clearly that is not the case. There are other subtle but definite differences. If you swap in a gauge from an 87 or 88 into an 84 the oil pressure gauge won't work because the sender is an on/off switch. Lots of little things like that.

I don't know if all 84 boards are the same. I've only looked at one. I would imagine GM would have saved a few pennies and not put the cruise board in the non-cruise cars.

There is a cruise specific speedometer and a non cruise speedometer in the 84's. I found that out once when I was putting cruise control in a non-cruise 84. I found out the main car harness is also different between cruise and non-cruise---it was a lot of work!

As far as dash swaps and such, I remember seeing a GM service bulletin about a kit to install the later cruise module into an 84 for repair purposes since GM apparently discontinued making the cruise speedometer as a replacement part shortly after the 84 model year ended. Sorry, I don't have access to the service bulletin list right now.
