I want to rebuild my 1987 GT Getrag 5 speed to replace the 3rd gear syncro which clashes.
I recently was told just to put the GM syncro mesh, that is about 30.00 a quart, and the syncro will mesh again?
Do I need to take my tranny apart and rebuild it or just put in some GM overpriced fluid?
If I need to take it apart what kind of job am I in for on this rebuild?

get Penzoil Syncromesh... its about 4.50 a quart and is almost the exact same stuff... we just did this to my friends MR2 turbo and it made a world of difference. you could just learn to double clutch if you dont wanna change the fluid.

Usually when the syncros go its because of chipped and or worn teeth to replace all three syncros in the getrag is about $550.00 thier not cheap.

but the syncromesh is a cheap way of fixing it if it works.

FWIW, I've put synchromesh in a muncie four speed and a getrag that both had bad third gear synchros. It didn't help the shifting that much. I replaced the muncie with a almost new one from Fiero Dave. Now it's a pleasure to drive. I'm replacing the getrag right now. Some people seem to have better luck with them than others. Both of my standard shift cars came with bad transmissions.

$4.50/qt ???? That is a big difference. Even if it's $4.50/half pt would be a $12.00 savings. Is it really the same stuff or at least compatable? If that's a fact, that's a good tip. Thanks. Anyone else with same opinion?

I appologize if I offended anyone. Usually you don't see that much of a difference amongst manufacturers. That's incredible and thanks again.

I put brand new synchros in my getrag 5 speed and they were no where near $550 if I can find out where I got them from my dad I will let you know... Also 3 gear will go bad on these due to the 3 gear bearing I took mine apart and all that was left were the metal rollers the plastic pieces were all metled, the new replacement ones are different and have a metal case of some sort around the roller pins... I'll check with my dad today where we got the synchros, I know its a company that specializes in only gears for transmissions... waaaay cheaper than getting them from GM...

I will be your best friend forever if you find a place to get Getrag blocker rings cheap.

$100 each from GM is a bit much for a 3.5" diameter ring that fits in the palm of my hand and weighs 4 ounces.

For general info...
The Getrag has 5 blocker rings of two different types: 1st and 2nd take the larger ring while 3rd, 4th and 5th take the smaller.
The synchronizer is a different assembly... basically the synchro assembly is a shift collar that's made to use a blocker ring.

When a transmission grinds going into a given gear, the BLOCKER RING is worn out. The synchronizer is not necessarily worn out. The more you grind, the more you abuse the engagement teeth of the synchro, but it takes a lot of grinding to make a synchro unserviceable... and pretty much as long as it doesn't pop out of gear, th synchro is still useable.
I overhauled a Getrag that had a completely worn out 3rd gear blocker ring. There was some wear on the synchro teeth and on the egagement splines on the 3rd gear, but both were still serviceable. We replaced the synchro but kept the gear. That trans has been behind my Northstar for over a year and has had no problems associated with that synchro.

Got the info right here:

Drive Train Central
Spirit Lake Iowa
10131 Hwy 276

1-888-444-4734

The total for 5 brand new synchos and actually I think 2 3rd gear bearings was just over $100 not sure how much over but it defineatly was not close to $200... Spread this info on the forum and let others know, I am unsure if the supply is limited but I do not think it is. I believe they manufacture them or someone else does for them...

glad I could help..., let me know if they still have them and if you get them, I hope you do

so how about some blocker rings for the 4speeds... they seem to be the trans with the most syncro problems

I'm trying to remember which part the blocker ring is... I've rebuilt 2 getrag 5 speeds... not totally but I had the internals out on one and I had the entire gear assemblies taken apart on another, I don't recall my Dad saying anything about blocker rings, or reading anything about them on alldata, all I iknow is that we put in new synchro gears and a new 3rd gear bearing and it no longer grinds... they were copper or brass colored and had teeth on them... are the blocker rings the parts the are right next to them with the 3 bearings in each that snap together one on the outside and one on the inside? I remember those, sorry Im not good with technical terms, I;m still learning, but give the place a call they may have them...

I talked to them and they were going to price me a kit for complete rebuild and the individual parts if you have a problem area in the tranny.

I'm still waiting for them to call em back about the kits.

I will call them again Friday if I don't hear from them.

I found a 87 GT 5 speed fiero with 86,000 miles on it going for $2,250
The person says that 3rd gear is gone, is this a common problem on the 5
speed getrags???

Also, how easy is this to fix, I don't know too much about cars but I have
some friends who know what they are doing...

Do you think this car is worth going after?

Thanks

They gave me an estimate of $350 for blocker rings and bearings.

http://www.drivetrain.com/muncie282FWD.html lists a rebuild kit for $305 and a blocker ring kit for $126.

I haven't found out enough about either of these options to satisfy myself that they are good yet. I guess I'll have to get one and look at it to see if I like what material they used on the blocker rings.

Will, get and send me thru email the GM part numbers on the bearings and blocker rings as well as any other getrag trani parts you may need and I will see what parts that I might have available.
I have one 200 pound pallet of nos trani parts and it says getrag 282 on one of the boxes, I haven't had the time to track down the part numbers with GM yet. I might have some getrag trani parts, but I can only help if I have part numbers, because the parts I have a list of parts numbers with NO descriptions of the parts. I might have a ton of those parts nos and don't even know it.

email me directly with the part numbers you want to see if I have those parts in stock
