how about a bit more information on your motor:

1) what kind of injectors are you using and what is their flow rate?
2) what fuel pressure?
3) have you modified the chip any?

any other info could be helpful

I am running 42 psi fuel pressure,2.8 injectors and no mods on the chip. But have another question Is there a difference between the 2.8 timing gears set and the 3.4?

nope

now, when you do the swap, you know that you have to make a new 0° timing mark on the harmonic balancer since it will be different with the 3.4

If your car is running rich and conking out at about 3500rpm, it sounds like a timing issue

Use the 3.4 injectors.

The timing is the same for the 3.4L as it is for the 2.8L. (10* BTDC)
You should be using the 3.4L injectors.
It is beneficial to have the prom reprogrammed for the engine.
You could also have a fault in the system like a bad catalytic converter, bad O2 sensor, dirty injectors, weak spark/ignition, Vacuum leak, etc.
When you did the swap, Did you replace any sensors? How did the 2.8L run before you swapped in teh 3.4L?

you have to use the 3.4 injectors or raise the fuel pressure. Also try the ignition module, in the distributor, Autozone will test it for free. Leaking spark plug wires can cause problems like that. Look at them at night while the car is running, look for sparks. I have had wires that only leak under load. Your problem sounds like the injectors though.

Hey guys, he says he's running rich so I don't think the stock 2.8 injectors are the problem. I do agree though, he should be running the 17# injectors.

Urge, Oreif hit it right on the head with the 3.4 swap. If you do it you should consider replacing all of the old sensors. They're probably about 20 years old by now. Also, like he said, you should have the EPROM reprogrammed for your new engine. That could be your problem.

One thing, how do you know it's running rich?

Ditto on the injectors. Unless you turn your fuel pressure way, way up the 2.8 injectors just won't flow enough, and I'm not even sure the regulator will work properly with the pressure up that high anyway.

When I did my 3.4 pushrod swap in Oct. '03 I had problems with it. It wouldn't rev very good, would cut out and surge. The problem was the MAP sensor, I had a bad electrical connection at the MAP. Fixed the connection and it worked perfect. May not be what is wrong with your car, but worth a look.
