I have taken off the center caps of my rims which had "Dezent" embossed on them, filled them in and painted them with chrome paint from a rattle can.

I want to apply a cut-out Fiero logo. However the chrome rubs off easily and the can says that it can't be clear coated. I tried and the result is bad. Also the foil logo is destroyed by the solvents in the clear coat.

Any ideas on how to protect logo and chrome paint? Thanks

What I did was to print the logo on transparency and then cut it out. I sprayed some clear lacquer down and stuck it down.

The lacquer did not ruin the paint. Clear coat also works.

To be fair though, I ended up buying centers from Pontiac with the arrow on them. The transparencies never did look as good as factory print.

i print out my own logos for guitar head stocks. my own not copies.....

i cover them with tabletop clear epoxy. just mix it up and pour it on. let it settle itself. for those though, you'd want something UV inhibited so they don't yellow on you.

Clear epoxy would work perfect for this app. Good idea!

I'm suspecting you sprayed clear lacquer over the decal and base paint. You generally cannot spray lacquer over fresh enamel as the solvents in the lacquer will soften and wrinkle the enamel. I imagine the solvents in the also attacked the decal.

Why the silver paint can be rubbed off I don't know, but that certainly shouldn't happen.

I would suggest starting over with a premium enamel spray paint and use a vinyl decal. Paul McKibben sells fiero wheel center cap decals. Just scroll down this link...

http://www.fierosails.com/decal.html

Clearcoat over the vinyl shouldn't be necessary, but if you insist, an enamel based clearcoat shouldn't react with the base paint or decal. Whatever you do, test the compatibility of the clearcoat, decal, and basecoat on some scraps before you spray the real things.

I spray clear laquer or clear urathane over tape pinstripes all the time. See what kind of paint your 'chrome' can is (laquer, urathane, enamel, or acrylic) and find the same thing in clear spray can. I have painted wheels on custom golf carts chrome and cleared them to keep it from 'smudging' with no problem.
