Recently a customer came by with a 88 GT that he had swapped the motor and was having all kind of weird problems so I started to look it over put the charger on to bring up the battery ,after about a half an hour I went to start it then saw smoke coming from the vent on the driver side .
Ran around and opened the decklid only to see the clutch line on fire also the front brake hose so I grabbed the extinguisher and put it out after disconnecting the battery so up on checking I discovered that he did not have a ground connection ,so make sure and check that you have at least two ground cables or straps from the motor and tranny to the body to avoid this problem, turns out the clutch line and the brake line was the source of ground and just heated up the brake fluid ........could be worse if you were driving and that happened .

Funny how electricity will follow the path of least resistance.
I had something similar happen to the wires going to my fuel pump. The heat shield cut the ground and it caused the other wire to burn up. I spliced in a new wire and installed new ground cables.

Definately good advise!

As mentioned you need a large ground wire from the battery to the engine and another large wire from the body to the engine. Also a large wire from the battery to the body would not hurt.

One is bolted to the Head, near the AC compressor, the other is one of the enging/tranny mounting bolts.
