There's been lots of threads about 6x9s and even 6.5s in the dash. Just checking in to see if anyone has ever tried the Infinity 4x6 component plate speakers in the dash? Im not much of a stereophile (don't have the ear or the brains for it), my deck is 50Wx4 and one of my front speakers is blown - time to replace it. I'd like to put a little more base in the system but I'd be willing to just add the factory sub if that was the best way to go about it. I certainly don't need a lot of base, so I think a factory sub would be fine since it would tuck under the dash.
Also, does anyone have an opinion on these speakers I'm looking at?
Also in my garage, I have a cheap pair of Clarion 6x9 1-way and a nice pair of Kicker Impulse 4x6 2-way.
From what I've read on the forum here, the round speakers are going to sound better than a oval 4x10. The plate speakers look to have a round 4" and a round tweeter on them, not sure if the crossover is built in or not, or if one is needed..
TIA for any input.

The problem using 4X6 plates in front is the woofer is a 3.5" woofer. Very little (if any) bass response. I have 4" round with a 1" tweeter component set-up and use an 8" subwoofer for the bass (low) frequencies. Even with the factory sub, the 4X6 plates won't sound very good as the front stage (main) speakers. They are best used as fill type of speakers. The 4X6 plates work very well in the sail panels. If the tweeter is mounted to the 4", then the cross-over is built in.
I have used the Pioneer 4X10's before and they were fine. The Infinity plates sound great in the sail panel location.

I just ditched my new Audiobahn 4x10's in the front to an old set of Boston Pro 6.5" components. It was a little tricky finding a spot for the rather large crossovers, but well worth pulling the dash and all that stuff. Difference between 4x10's and the 6.5" components are night and day.
Its funny you should ask this.....I just got my new Crutchfield catalog in the mail yesterday and was thinking about all the goodies. I noticed the Infinity 4x6 plate speakers too. Glad I saw this thread. Is it hard to change over to 6.5 or whatever? Cutting involved?

Key, wasn't hard at all to install the speakers. I took my time and did it bit by bit. The dash will have to come out. I installed the tweeters on the outside of the 4X10 speaker hole from the top, and the woofer to the inside of the hole, bolted from the bottom. I did have to grind a bit away behind the dash, the speaker hit the metal frame, but not much. I just went thru a few Dremel cutting wheels. So far it sounds great!!
Since I am a JL Audio, Alpine, Kenwood dealer I can not recommend the Infinity or Pioneer speakers but I can tell you that I just put a set of JL Audio 5 1/4" in the dash with minimal effort and they sound great. I like to build a sealed housing under the speaker to help reinforce the midbass response too. I thought about using the 6 1/2" but did not want to do the amount of work required at this time. I will in the future though. As far as rear fill I use the JL Audio 4". I am trying to figure out how to fit a 8W7 sub in now, oh and a 3800 SC
Fiero77 - are the 4" JL Audio speakers in your seats or B-pillars? I've heard of 3.5" in the headrest, figured 4" would be do-able but I hadn't seen it done.
3.5 inch two in each seat . it takes a bit toi change them you need a set of hog ring pliers and hog rings for the job i have not done a set yet but i would this that being in installations for many years i could do them in about 2 hours with bo problems. oh yea and merry christmas

You know, I have a set of Clarion 4x6's in the dash, they're the good ones (Though I can't remember the name. Top of the line, anyhow.) I just mounted them using two of the screws that were originally for the 4x10's, and they sit in there fine. As for sound quality, no, there's not a ton of bass, but the sheer quality of the sound is what counts, to me anyway. It's a 4 inch mid driver and a 1 inch tweeter on a plate. Run it off a 50w/ch amp, and it goes louder than I'll ever need, with incredible clarity. Rather enjoyable.
So if you don't care about just a little loss of bass, a really good set of 4x6's can do the job quite well.
You know what would be cool is if you made each left and right speaker in each seat a true stereo left and right speaker....if that's not the way its set up. My stereo isn't hooked up right now because the previous owner fried it trying to install it so I'm saving the $$$ right now for a nice system all around. I don't see why that wouldn't be doable though. If you had a nice subwoofer/amp in the middle hump why would you need a lot of bass anywhere else? I would think the rest of the speakers would be good for mid/high's. Just a thought.
putting 6.5's in the dash didn't need any cutting, for me anyways
all i did was turn them sideways to slide them in, i didn't have to take out the dash either, i made metal brackets to hold them up heres the link to what i did, i just got new speakers for X-mas so i'll redo it and make it look nice and do a GOOD install this time and take lots of pics along the way
you do have to cover the holes on either side of the speaker, it makes it sound awesome!
w/o a sub taking the dash out and going with 6x9's would be the way to go but if your going to add a sub, do these, but they do have a TON more bass than the stupid 4x10's
