Is there any way to test the pick up coil with the distributor out of the car? I'm trying to track down a starting problem and I want to eliminate this as a possibility so I broke out a spare distributor I had laying around to rebuild but I was just wondering if it's possible to test this out of the car.

The p-u coil puts out an A/C voltage, meter set to mV A/C spinning shaft should get 750 mV or 3/4 volt, you might have to connect the pig-tail from module and turn key on. Need a digital multimeter.

Testing for proper operation is one thing... age and life expectancy is another.

If you have the distributor out, why not replace it?

Easy and only around $15..... then your good for another 10 to 20 years.

PS: only use a AC Delco pickup coil as your replacement

I would have to agree about replacing the pick up coil, as it is really inexpensive. And considering how much a road side tow would cost, or the inconvenience of being stranded out in the middle of no where...I would replace it if the distributor was already out.

Its easy to do, just drive out the roll pin that holds the gear, pull the shaft out, remove the spring clip that holds the coil and do the install in reverse. You may need some carb cleaner to get the shaft to come free as it will be stuck most likely.

When I got my Silver SE, it drove perfectly for like 2 months. The first morning it was foggy out, it wouldnt start. Get home from work in the afternoon, it starts right up. Next morning, fog, no start.

The Pick up coil had some green corrosion forming on the terminals and was intermittent.

Just a heads up, just like everyone on the forum says to replace your ignition module, the pick up coil is a part of that equation also.

I agree that you should replace it anyway. When it fails (happens sooner or later) it can leave with a dead engine along the side of the road. Then you will regret not replacing it....

When mine was broken it showed an open circuit when I mesured it with an ohmmeter(not a single spark from the engine). The correct procedure for checking the coil is in the Haynes and Chilton manuals.

Good luck!
