Took the dash off my 85 GT, Auto to run the wires for the power door locks. Got it back together and started the eng and the Check eng light stays on. Shut it down to check the codes, jumpered AB, turn the ignition on and the check eng light stays steady (no codes) and I hear a faint buz from the engine compartment! Track it down to the IAC motor is running continuously any time it's in diagnostic mode with the key on. Started pulling the dash apart to see if I pinched some wires but haven't found anything yet. Any ideas????

My first guess...

Check the plugs on the dash very carefully. Specificaly look at the copper traces on the dash to make sure one hasn't come loose and caused a short with an adjacent terminal. I haven't seen it myself but that is apparently fairly common.

Most of the plugs you are dealing with in the dash only fit one way and in the right places. The only one that you could mess up may be C201 where the 300, cross car, harness plugs into the 200, main cabin, harness. Even if you did plug something in the wrong place on C201, I think most of the C201 plugs have nothing to do with anything that would bother the ECM.

While you are messing with the dash... you should also fix the temp gauge wiring if you haven't already. At the very least, snip the wire that runs to the ignition so it stops pegging the gauge. Fixing the Temp lamp so lamp test works is optional.

Thanks Ogre. As usual you pointed me in the right direction. 3 of the traces at the connector were messed up. Straightened and smoothed them and everything is normal again. The temp guage fix had been previously done. Thanks again.
