This is an offshoot of my "weird emissions label" thread. I have been talking to a GM service technician who claims they (years ago) used to put labels like the one I have on cars that they had to add an Air Injection Reaction pump to... he claimed that all sorts of 2.8L cars had bulletins issued for them because they were failing emissions inspections in some states, so the fix was to add an AIR system to them. He wasn't sure of the Fiero was one of them.
I've never seen a Fiero with an AIR pump, myself. Have you?

He could be refering to the old 2.8 carbeurated rochester 2SE engines from early citations etc. and used accross the board on GM. These had primative emissions, with no computerized air fuel control on the 2SE carb (but yes on the E2SE carb.) So, with no air pump, no pulsair, no air fuel electic control on the carb, can someone explain how a cat converter will work well/at all and why bother with an oxygen sensor? (They have been on all cars since 1975.) The cats need air to work.
The fieros all had FI so they do not need the air pump since the computer can adjust the air/fuel from oxy sensor feedback.

My '86 S-10 w/2.8 5spd 4*4 has an AIR pump setup on it.
Pretty simple setup in comparison to some I've seen (where they had one injection tube for each cylinder, with a crossover tube feeing each on the opposite bank!
One tube - dumps straight into the R/H manifold.

Just an FYI, SOME 3.4L TDC engines had air pumps. From 1991-1993, all 5-speeds got Air pumps, mainly becuz of the increased compression(9.5 vs 9.25 for the autos). And then in 1996, they increased c/r from 0.25 to 9.7, and they also added the AIR pump. But IIRC you can order it on an automatic, and maybe all CA cars got it, I'm not sure. So maybe it had something to do with compression the some cars, maybe the ones more prone to fail emissions.
But for a swap, just an FYI, just plug the holes in the exhaust manifolds. The ECU won't notice a thing. And if it does, it can't do anything about it anyway...

I had a Chevy Citation ,The Sport Model " X-11" w / 2.8 HO and I think it had an air pump on it. Believe it not That was one of the best cars I had.
I had both an 81 citation base model, and an 83 x-11 I LOVED both of those cars, I wish I could find another x-11 in decent shape to buy. I miss both of them.

AIR pumps were on American Chevettes, they also had electronic mixture contols on the carb from 1981+, so they also had a computer and o2 sensor, another thing they had was a vented fuel bowl. Canadian Chevettes had none of them. Good old vaccumme controlled everything, the only emissions are an EGR and a cat convertor.
