Popular Hot Rodding (I think) did a similar build a few years ago. In the interests of being cheap, they used custom pistons with Ford 300/6 rods (6.209 length). They used AFR aluminum heads and ran 11:1 compression on 87 octane with a relatively small cam. It made 410 HP, 430 TQ.

you could also build an LT1 from this. Use the Lt1 block and heads and the L99 cranks rods, with your choice of pistons. This would give you an injected 302. I dont know how the ECM can handle those RPM's, but thats something that can be worked out.

Whats the RPM limit for the trans? How can the synchro's handle that power that high up?

I thought about doing this with an lt1, and was close enough, I almost bought the L99. But for me to go this route, it wouldn't be worth it unless I had over 450hp and that would have just cost too much. and i doubt if it would have been very reliable. Would be cool for sure. Gotta love the sound of a high RPM sbc.

The '69 Z28 my brother-in-law drove when I was a kid had a single high rise and 800 cfm double pumper holley and cowl induction (although I know the crossram dual carb setup was an option). It had 4.ll gears 4 speed of coarse. It weighed 3400lbs. the engine didn't even run smooth until about 2800 RPM. So if you were drag racing (if you could get the tires to stick) you came off the clutch at about 3000 RPM and then punched it. If the tires hooked up the front wheels were no longer on the ground. 290 HP rating was crap as already stated. True horspower was around 400. Although the crank had the same throw as a 283 it was MUCH heavier. That was helluva car! Doesn't need no blower! My advice: sell the 302 (if its original and not apunched 283) and get a modern small block with low compression and add a blower (if you want more horspower than you can get to the pavement). Use the remaider of the money to buy another Fiero! Let someone refurb an old Z with that one!
