I have repl the thermostat in my '85 gt 2.8L and it still overheats. I am going to burp it today but i am sure i will be putting a new water pump on today. I have never done this, so is there any tips I should know before I begin? I have the Hanes manual to guide me, but it is really just "guidlines". Any help will be appreciated.

If you don’t have air tools then it makes it easier if you loosen the bolts on the pulley before you pull the belt off.
Do not over tighten your bolts when you are installing the new pump. There is a bolt on the top of the pump that if you over tighten it you will bust off the ear. (I know)
Make sure the new pump has a metal impeller, if its plastic it will come loose and not turn causing your car to over heat (could be your problem now)
Set aside two days to do the job, you do not know what you will run into and the extra day will give you time to get it back on the road.
I have air tools and the last water pump I did took me 4 hours. But you can probably do the same if you stay at it, I like to take my time.
Good luck

Do a search for , Water pump R&R. Then read the response to the answer that I got when I posted this inquiry. I received a very detailed response with pics from Jazzman that outlines how to do this. Also read the one titled , Water pump bolt from Hell. That one tells my own hard luck story when changing out my pump. Good Luck ED

You might want to make a fresh list of swear words so you can be sure to use the all. Not a hard job but very frustrating. You will be questioning the heritage of the designer before you are done.

go at the pump from the wheel well
jack the car and pull the wheel
and loosen the inner fender plastic bit enuff to get around it
that will give you a strait shot at the pump
and you can see what you are doing

It is one of the most God-awful, patience trying, frustrating jobs.
You'lll want to think the designer graduated in the 5th percentile and
drew the short straw on the project to boot. Get cheap wrenches so when
you throw them and can't find em, you haven't really lost anything.
Get a mind set that this is going to be h_ll so that if every thing
goes well and it fixes your problem, you'll feel like a blooming
genius or a fantastic mechanic (maybe even both!).

Now we have properly set your attitude, Go To It!

Replace the stupid TORX bolts with regular metric bolts. ACE Hardware sells them in stainless steel.
Don't use a waterpump with the plastic impeller, use the metal impeller kind.

Have a propane torch and heat the bolts before you start to take them off...it makes sure they don't break off (I had a bad experience on mine)
