When you first start it, does the check engine light stay on? Have you checked for codes?

How is your idle at start up?
Is it steady and what rpm?
check codes again to be sure, If the check engine light is coming on after start up it should be setting a code.

i think i have found the problem. i removed the distributor cap and found that the tube which runs from the egr at the left hand side near the coil, around the cap to the plenum chamber nr the throttle housing, broken at the plenum end from its flange i positioned the pipe bak to its position and the car ran fine (only tempory) thus i can only think it is this which is evident.
thank you for trying to help.
now going to find a tube on the net.
