Hey guys,

I've been following all the steering rack / ratio threads and I don't think we ever got a definite answer. As I understand it, the cars with the more "race" inspired ratio are all cars equipped with WS6 and all 88s, is that correct?

I also wanted to ask, what exactly is it that you remove from a junkyard car if you want to install the better ratio on your car?

Thanks!!!

All 88's are the same. They cant be adapted to pre 88's. So for an 88 the only thing you can do for faster steering is an aftermarket rack or power steering.
For all other years look for the GT's. They all have the faster ratio, but it aint much faster at all. Again if you want to get a faster ratio than the GT you need to look for an after market system or power steering.

If you can shorten the arms on the steering knuckles and also get a smaller steering wheel, that technically lowers the steering ratio too.

To my knowledge (not that I've done it) you only need to swap the rack. ('84 - '87)

According to a book called FIERO by Gary Witzenburg

'84 all = 19.2:1
'85-'87 non GT = 22.0:1
'85-'88 GT = 19.2:1
'88 all = 19.2:1

Hmm... If you're ready to take on a big project, the IROC-Z had a 14.5 to 1 ratio

i am too curious about the racks. i know that the slower rack is slower, but HOW much of a difference it is? ive driven one withthe slower rack once, and i twas for a short period, so i didnt really get a chance to see how it was. my GT has the faster one. i am curious to how much of an effect it will have with the slower one. is there a definate difference? thanks!

Thanks Rick! I have the Fiero Book, I don't know why I never think to look in there.

I'll go hunting for an 84 then in the yard!

Thanks!!!
