Brought my car in for a safety check, and they tell me my left lower balljoint is shot, and my driver's left spindle is shot too: my left balljoint was loose, and vibrated its hole in the spindle to a larger size.

They say its going to be an expensive fix, so I am going to attempt it myself. I have access to a parts car. I have replaced the front springs before myself, but never removed the whole spindle. What is required?

Thanks
Adrift

Front or rear?
I know the rear.
It will be kinda dificult to get the strut out of the rear. ( mine was )
and you will need to get it re-alligned.

after the tire is off, you have two large bolts for the strut the nut for the tierod end and a bolt with a nut under the spindal for the lower ball joint. and i think it is a 32mm nut for the half-shaft. ( get a shaft puller, don't beet the half shaft out )

I am sure someone else can explain it better than I can.
so this is just incase noone does.

What year? And like extreme asked, are we talking front or rear?

I just recently replaced all the ball joints and the right front spindle on my 88 Formula. You have to take the spidle off to replace the balljoints, so it's not any more work to replace the spindle. I found a replacement spindle in a junk yard for $45. Rodney Dickman has ball joints for all years, and you'll need to rent or buy a ball joint press.

If you have any questions, let me know. It's not a difficult job. You will have to remove the front spring, so be sure you have some chain to secure the spring when you're removing it.

Check out this thread for some great description and pics of a rebuild. It's on an '88, but it should give you a good idea even if your car is a pre-88.
