Also the people getting the really good mileage with the Duke are using manual transmissions. Also make sure that your TCC is working correctly... does there feel like there is a fourth gear that kicks in when you stop accelerating?

REALLY!!! My 87 GT did 22-24 on the freak'n highway.Told the wife it's a 'commuter' car and would get better mileage than my Expedition, made a liar out of me.....
the car other than at low idle runs like a top.. rebuilt with about 2000 miles on the motor. 3 angle valve job. tons of power.. and NO i dont beat the s%$t out of it either but my 86 GT i just sold was getting 21 mpg on the same drive to work my 84 does with 22 mpg..
anyone live in south easter mi. and wants to buy a decent 84?....
When new and the speed limit was 55mph, I'd get 36 mpg with my 87GT using 5 speed getrag on the highway. At 100K mile it can get 30-33 mpg on the highway at 70mph.

Gas mileage just like performance varies even on identically equipped brand new cars. The numbers on the window sticker are based upon test model(s) and represent an average expected. Some will be higher some lower. Of course as someone stated earlier condition of the vehicle has a lot to do with it as well. I had an 84 with an Iron Duke and when I first bought it it got like 19 MPG. After I did a full tune up, and replaced things like the EGR valve and the PCV which the guy had rigged up really wierd (that's a whole story in and of itself), It bumped up to average to about 24-25 MPG dependant upon the grade of fuel I was running. I know the Duke is capable of better though. My first car was a 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera with the good ol' Duke in it and that big heavy boat of a car got 26-28 MPG.
