if your doing only straight line drag racing a 245/45/17 will fit on a 17x7, but will be alittle too fat for the rim and swell out the sides, if you do more performance driving a 225/45/17 will be better, 235 is decent, but still has more sidewall flex than a 225/45/17
ive been running 215/45/17's front and 225/45/17 rear on my rims and i feel its a good combo, but i wouldnt hesitate to run 225/45/17's all around.

Right now I've got 245/45/17s on an 8" rim, and personally I wouldn't go much narrower on the rim if you plan on turning any corners. If you have to use 7", use a 225. Otherwise, go to an 8" rim and be glad you did. PS. If you care about the look, the 245 on an 8" looks really nice and square, I imagine it would bulge out on a 7".

I used to have 245's on my 17x7's. Only reason I took them off is because I destroyed them at track day in Kansas. I didn't notice any negative handling effects, and I don't think the people I passed noticed any negative effects either. I was the only 4 popper on the track, and all day, only one person passed me. But I passed many people.
I have the Falken Azenis Sports on my '88. 225/45/17 front on 8" rim, 245/45/17 on an 8" rim. The 245 on a 7" rim is probably a bit too much for autocross (I assume autocross with those tires).
Falken has a new tread design for the Azenis Sport for 05 and supposed to be more sizes available including 18".
