Check out http://dtcc.cz28.com/gminfo.htm

The way to tell is:

1) S1 has unevenly spaced exhaust ports, S2 has evenly spaced ports
2) S1 has a squarer-looking intake, S2 looks like a series of half-cylinders.

S2 photo from Darth's installation into The Adjuster's car:

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I misread your initial post. Hopefully the edit above helps. I would rely on the exhaust ports to ID an engine. I'm not sure if the S2 N/A even had an engine cover... I'd sure like to see one if they did.

Both N/A and SC 3800 Series II engines had covers that said Series II on them. As mentioned above, Series II engines had evenly spaced intake and exhaust ports which means the injectors and spark plugs are evenly spaced as well. The Series I 3800's did NOT have evenly spaced ports, injectors, nor spark plugs. Easiest way to tell in-car is find the year of the vehicle, all 96-up GM cars with a 3800 were all Series II. In 1995 the Series II n/a was available along with the Series I TPI engine that also has a plastic upper intake. The Series I was the vin L engine (8th vin digit), and the Series II N/A was vin K.
