Is there an easy way to tell if my factory subwoofer amplifier is any good? When I play the stereo all I get out of the sub is a faint grunt as the speaker cone jumps back and forth. I've checked the speaker using another source (old stereo receiver) and it seems to work OK. I also jumpered the sub to the rear speaker leads, and it didn't seem to be working. If the amp is fried, can I adapt one of the "cheapo" amps that they sell at WalMart, Radio Shack, etc.? Does anyone know of a detailed wiring diagram for the factory sub system?
Thanks, Ray.
Begining stages of "enhancing" my '87 GT 5-spd.

I have just installed a sub woofer from the fiero store (box and all) When I tested the speaker with a simple sound system it will work but not the way you want it to... It uses lower Freq signal to get the bass that you need..

The best way to test your sub is to take it to Circuit city and they can test the unit. Also they have a way of putting a new sub system on your leads from you amp and test the output.

I went with a new stereo system and it comes with a sub amp built in the radio / CD player and makes the whole car sound great. I did not have to put a amp in for the sub woofer... What will they think of next.

Oh yea that unit came from circuit city also. Pioneer is the one that makes this unit.

Hope this helps

I put the factory subwoofer in my 85 Fiero and it sounds great! I just need to know what to do with the blue chime box that was attach to the side of the heater box. I had to unscrew it, so I could get the sub box in, under the dash. After I got the sub box in, there was no room for the chime unit. Today, I went to use the heater and I couldn't slide the controls over to heat because the chime box is jammed next to the control cable. could anyone tell me how to fix this.

Thanks,
Don Z.

You do not need to take the chime out, just unscrew the bracket where the light is at on the kick panel.
angle the box up and it will slide in the position without issues. I can shoot some pictures for you if you need. Just let me know how to help you.

You can call anytime after 6:00 PM and I can walk you through it.

If you have the factory deck installed you will find a small box under the carpet on the left side of the passenger compartment where the sub amp sits, check that first.

3.8 SC if you can find a parts car a 86 or later. Take the heater box end cover off of that and it will bolt right up to your heater box. In the later models have the chime unit connector is facing down and to the front instead of to the side like the 85 do. The connect will screw right up into the new heater box cover with no problems, only with one screw the other side fits into the slot that holds it tight. Once the sub box is install you can plug the chime unit in. I have just went through this with my 85. And I got a heater box cover and the black plastic item that holds the amp behind the carpet.
