Hi Everyone. My 3800 shoots coolant out of the top of the thermostat housing when I give it alot of gas. I have changed the t-stat housing cap and the radiator cap. Still does it. Any ideas at all. Does anyone fill their coolant up at the radiator. I might just put the factory 3800 thermostat housing on and fill it up at the radiator. Thanks for any help or advice. Rob

I had a whole bunch of problems with my WCF modded Fiero T-Stat housing, so I tossed it and put the stock outlet back in and am running a gutted stock thermostat...

are you still using the stock 3800 serpentine belt tensioner bracket with integrated heater hose passages? This bracket contains an internal water pump bypass circuit that prevents excessive pressure from building in the cooling system due to water pump head pressure. If you have removed this bracket or disabled the coolant flow through both sides of it, this could be your problem.

Before I changed to the fiero style t-stat housing, I filled from the front. It was time consuming, but doable. I would remove the t-stat housing, fill as much as I could there... until it flowed from the rad fill, replace the housing, and bleed any remainnig air thru the bleeder port on the stock housing. After the first fill/bleed, I only had to top it off, and I did that by adding to the coolant overflow bottle as needed.

Revin replied that he uses a flush kit to bleed his.. that would be much faster than my old way.

I bought my housing from FastFiero (Loyde) His has a heater core return line plumbed into it, so I have coolant bypassing thru the core at all times which serves the same purpose as the bypass in the stock 3800 tensioner assembly.

Well, here's my problem with that modded housding. First the mounting holes on the bottom were elongated to fit the L67. That would be all fine and dandy, if they didn't make them so huge that the hole in the intake manifold shows through them (leak city). In addition to that, ALL the welds leaked. I also didn't want to re-route the hoses I had set up already, so I put a rubber cap on the HC outlet on that housing, and that would dry-rot and burst like once a month at some random time. All I have to say is that thing is one huge piece of crap, and I'm glad I'm rid of it and all my coolant leaks.

I used the stock housing. Here's how I fill. Take the stock housing off and the thermostat/O-ring. Pour coolant into engine till it fills to the top. I rock the car back and forth to help let out the air. Put that all back together. Take the coolant hose for that side and fill it till it's full. Carefully and quickly put it on the outlet with out spilling too much. Now go up front and lift the front end up. Open the rad. cap and fill as necessary. Set the front down and run the car till the thermostat opens. When that happens open up the little bleeder on top of the water outlet and let the little bit of air out till it's only coolant. Close that and run it at temp for a bit and make sure the reservoir is full. Voila, coolant filled .

Rob,

I used the stock alternator mount and the stock thermostat housing. I am using a 180* thermostat drilled with 4 1/8" holes.

The return line for the 87 -88 Fiero heater goes back into the coolant tube on the passenger side. The heater return line for the 3800 is in the alternator braket and is the one closest to the back of the car.

To fill the coolant, I elevate the rear of the car and attach a piece of heater hose on the 3800 return in the alternator bracket. I open the bleed screw on the top of the stock thermostat housing and fill coolant with a funnel through the heater return. After the radiator is full and the cap is replaced, you can hear the air escaping from the motor through the bleed screw as you continue to add coolant. When coolant without air comes out of the thermostat housing, close the bleed screw and continue to fill untill the heater hose attached to the heater return line on the alternator bracket is full. Remove the heater hose from return inlet on the alternator bracket and cap it with a rubber cap and hose clamp. The caps are available in the HELP section of an auto parts store.

I have used this method on initial fills and never had to re-bleed the system nor have I had any air in the cooling system or cooling problems.

I hope this helps.

I also use the stock 3800 t-stat housing and just fill the engine coolant up thru the heater return line AT the tensioner bracket, then top off the system at the radiator if needs-be.
