Lately i have been having some doubts about whether or not my trunk lid has been replaced. The back says "2m6" and that's part of the reason i bought it. However, I suspect the car has been repainted because the spot on the headlight cover that says "pontiac" has some spots that look like the paint kinda puddled but I also think that maybe it's just starting to bubble up a little in that spot. The main reason I am suspect though, is that a friend told me that the "m" in 2m6 stands for manual but mines an automatic. Should i be suspect or am i just paranoid? By the way, its a 1988 2.8 liter v6 with a spoiler on the back. I suspect that maybe the trunk lid was replaced because the original owner wanted a spoiler on the back. Any input would help, thanks.
P.S. there are really no other indicators that it has been repainted such as spots of paint where they shouldn't be, etc.

2M6= 2 seat, mid engine, 6 cylinder
2M4= 2 seat, mid engine, 4 cylinder

All fiero's were either 2M6 or 2M4

OK, well that sounds logical, but if that's the case, then why don't all v6 fieros say 2m6 on the back and why is it that so many people are looking for a 2m6. If all v6 Fieros are 2m6 then they shouldn't really be that uncommon.

A 88 2.8 would either be a GT or a Formula. GT's did not have any Fiero badging on the rear, just a GT emblem in the rear moulding. Formulas and coupe both only had Fiero on the sticker on the rear deck lid, no 2M4 or 2M6.

If you have a 2M6 sticker on the back of your 88, someone added it, or replaced the decklid like you suspect.

Although a lot of people prefer a v-6 car, I can't say I have ever heard of anyone specifically wanting a '2M6'. It's just a decal on the decklid.

Well Electrathon, can't say I necessarily agree with you.

Yes there were 2m4s and 2m6s, but the 2m4 and 2m6 were a specific model. You won't find 2m6 or 2m4 written on the back of an SE Fiero, or a Formula, or a GT.

However, I think it was FieroJosh that said it.. I certainly would love to have a 2m6, especially a 2m6 SC with the 4-Speed and V6, one of the quickest stock Fieros you can buy.

Actually, the 84 SE, 85 SE, 86 SE, and a very small number of 87 SE's all used the 2m4 or 2m6 decal, depending on what engine they had.

Completely stock 86 SE V6 4 speed in the garage with factory 2M6 sticker, I would have to say you are wrong on this.

My bone-stock '86SE V6 auto has the 2M6 decal on the back ...

I'd have said that all Fieros were either 2M 4(cylinder) or 6 ... and that there were various sub-categories available within the 2M4/2M6 family. The presence/absence of a decal, even from the factory, doesn't change the fact that it is either one or the other.

Beware of impossible combos -- I frequently see ads for '84 2M6s, and the V6 was not available that year ...

I suspect what the OP has been told is that the notchie 2m6 without the heavier fastback clip is lighter and so more desirable ... that said, there are other advantages to the SE/GT option packages, and even the 'heavier' GT fastback brings some upgrades.

2m6 really does mean 2 seat, mid engine, 6 cylinders. My 86 SE happily wears the decal from factory.
