Does it rain alot where you live? The wider the tread, the greater the chance of hydroplaning.
I live in Florida, where it rains almost daily for 6-7 months per year. I personally wouldn't use rims wider than 7", or tires wider than 225mm because of this.
I have to agree. I have a 69 VW Beetle that had WIDE tires on the rear and hydroplaning was a constant for me. I too live in Florida. Definitely keep in mind the handling you'll have in rain...or lack of it!

Better: Looks Better: Performance Better: Handling Not Better: When it rains a lot where you are at, & it's your daily driver.
I have 17x8s on the front and 18x9's on the rear. I absolutely LOVE the way that it looks, and wouldn't change it back to anything less. I'd just drive slower in the rain, and get used to the increased "pucker" factor when you start to dance across the road.
If you get a set of tires that are capable of pumping lots of water, width shouldn't be a big problem. I have 225/50-15 Yokohoma EVS ES100 on 15x7 rims on the rear of my '85 and have been in some really heavy rains this summer with no problems. Now the accessory drive belt on the engine hydroplanes in those conditions though. My '88 has 235/45-17 Yokohoma EVS ES100 on 17x8 rims on the rear but its only been caught out in the rain once or twice but it was never very heavy rain.

Handling? too wide a rear tire can cause the car to understeer like a pig (Trust me I have been there) PErformance: The wider the Tire and rim combo , the heavier the unspriung weight...the slower you go.

18x9 (or 17x9) on the rear, 17x7 front, tires sized appropriately.
------------------ Turn the key and feel the engine shake the whole car with its lope; Plant the gas pedal and feel in your chest neither a shriek nor a wail but a bellowing roar; Lift and be pushed into the harness by compression braking that only comes from the biggest cylinders while listening to music of pops and gurgles. Know that you are driving and American V8. There are finer engines made, but none of them are this cool.

I like wide rims, but I don't think I'll ever buy any that are larger than 8 1/2" in the rear just for the fact that it does increase weight a lot. That's why I'm thinking of going with 15" wheels with just a bigger tire.
