Yeah, no kidding, I noticed it when I was changing the oil.

1/2" black tip on the dipstick.

Is this standard? Anybody else notice this? And, why a black tip?

Yep, that's normal on the 2.8 dipsticks. I believe the purpose of that black tip is to help aid the dipstick pass through the dip stick tube without fetching up.

The tip is a special plastic, and I suspect its primary purpose is to keep the dipstick from making metal shavings as it travels around the curve in the dipstick tube.

Yeah... That or it's some sort of birth control. (Related to an Obscure short story about "servicing" cars. One of the funniest things I've ever read.)

When you get to be my age you'll paint the end of the dip sticks white. Makes it a lot easier to read even in the dark.
