In a previous thread Arns85GT asked me to post some pics of the heat shield that I had made to put over my catalytic convertor, so here they are and an explanation.
I added an additional heat shield to my '85GT when I installed the new exhaust system. It is held on by letting the balance of Rodney's SS clamp bolts protrude through the new shield and it covers the entire length of Rodney's converter. I let it hang down lower than the bottom of the car in front of the convertor about an inch to catch some of the under car air and route it up over the convertor, there's about an inch of space between the factory shield and my new shield. It wraps around over the top of the convertor and back down to the aft convertor seamline and stops. There's probably a half inch of space between the convertor and the shield all the way around. This isolates the convertor from the engine, oil filter, starter, and etc. I'm hoping that it will route cooler air up and over the convertor into the engine bay. I put my hand into the area between the convertor and the engine after running the car. While the temp below the convertor was unbearable the temp between the new shield and the engine was hot but bearable. This is nothing fancy just aluminum flashing from the hardware store.
The following pic shows the front of the shield hanging lower than the bottom of the car.
