I recently purchased an 87 GT that has a sketchy 4 speed. tomorrow i am buying a replacement 4 speed. What is involved in swapping the engines and since the new tranny is used, what should I do to it before swapping it in. Finally, how long should this project take?

Info on new tranny - 4 speed from 85gt w/ 98,XXX miles. Car was totalled out due to minor body damage. Do not know how tranny was working at the time, but the car generally was in good shape and the engine worked fine.

I know this is not a simple answer so any info would be greatly appreciated.

The 87 GT is a 4 speed? They are 5 from the factory. If it is a 4 speed, then you just need to swap the tranny. If it was a 5, then get the 4 speed slave, cables, etc. You might even do the whole 85 cradle it it is good.

In a perfect world, cradle out, plunk, cradle back. You might consider driving until it breaks and you have to do it. At least till you tidy up the engine going in.

I would do the clutch while you are there, unless it is new.

My bad...typo...it is an 86....... I can't drive it at all right now, as the tranny in the car has something in it and it won't stay in gear or even go into gear. Previous owner dropped the vss gear or something into the tranny. Plus the tranny I am putting in has less miles on it and was from a fiero that generally was in better condition. Can't swap the whole thing as the tranny is from a local yard and someone already bought the engine. They removed the engine and tranny monday and I am picking it up today.

Thanks for the input....
