Hey guys, I recently took my vents off and painted them, and as I put them back on, I noticed one was nice and flush with the decklid, while the other one was 1/4" low and 1/4" away from it. I've heard of people aligning the decklid, but how do you get it flushly aligned to the 2 vents w/o takin the whole engine out, getting at the decklid screws from the bottom, after aligning from the top? I do realize that this is way too much to do for cosmetics but it really does look bad and uneven. Any help here?

You don't align the decklid to match the vents. You align the decklid to fit with the lock and fender lines. You do this with the vents out, so you can just close the decklid (with the mounting screws slightly loose), then nudge the decklid until it's aligned, then just tighten down the screws while it's closed by reaching in the empty vent area.

Then you install the vents and align THEM to match the decklid. The screw mount on the top of the strut is adjustable, so you just do some trial and error with that until you have the fit just right.

The vents have a tab that sits under the deck lid and has a rubber bumper on it. The ruber bumper contacts the deck lid when closed so if the tab is bent out of shape the lid will push the vent down as you close it. If the tab is bent the other way the vent will rattle. It is best to line up the deck lid then line up the vents so the tabs are just right.

I had this same problem with one of my vent sitting to high.
To adjust the "VENTS" to sit flush (at least on my 88), under the vent turn down screws
there is an adjustment for moving the vent mounts up and down.
loosen the mounting screws an move the mount till it is level.

This has nothing to do with adjusting the "deck lid". You only adjust the vents

Good Luck

If you look at the passenger-side vent, you will see that the vent is mounted to the top of
the strut. This is where the adjustment is.....
