On automatic transmission equiped cars you can only shift in and out of park when the ignition is in the on position. Also you can only shift in and out of certain "gears" if you have the button on the shifter handle pushed in. What I'm wondering is if anyone has disabled these locks, meaning you could shift in and out of all the gears without the key in the ignition and having to push in the handle button? Is it even possible to disable it?

Thanks,
Mike

Any safety feature can be defeated if you take the time to figure out how it works. Whether or not it is adviseable to do so however, is another story.

If you feel that you must disable one of them, disabling the ignition switch/shifter interlock has in my opinion less potential for trouble than disabling the mechanism on the shifter which requires "button presses" to move between certain gears.

Yes it is. I have done it when I put manual trannies in auto cars. I would not mess with the gear shift select button, it is a good idea to keep it. But the key lock out can be disabled by disconecting the front cable from the gear shifter. Pop off the black ball joint cable conecter and take the cable out of the front gear shifter mount/braket so the cable wont get in the way. It keeps you from pulling the key out when it is in gear and putting it in gear without the key in. It makes for a safety/anitheft device.

That is not in the front of the car, that problem is in the engine bay. You may want to replace the tranny select switch that is under the select cable and lever. It is the one with a electric conector on it. Or you may want to readjust the cable itself. The car wont start if it aint in "N" or "P" and that is why you need to move the shifter to start the car. So if the cable is not adjusted right it wont know if it is in "P" "N". The switch has two bolts that hold it on, they are slotted so you turn a little bit to alow you to line up the switch with the select handle.
