My car was running bad a couple weeks ago so I changed the air filter was wet changed the battery terminals connectors in the cables they were old. Changed the old pressure sender on the block was old. And redid the ground on the strap that goes to the deck lid all seems fine now but the idle wont drop when warmed up it hunts from 1500 to 2000. took off the battery cables for a hour hooked them back up nice 15 mile round trip at about 50 or so to rest the ECM. Same thing so today replaced all the vacume lines I could find on the car since they were probably from 85 also still no good tried in desperation I went and bought a code scanner at advance. Basically a 30 buck paper clip since it is that and a book. Still no light with key in and motor off in the run position. Last I took apart the dash put a known working bulb into the SES light and still no go tried the bulb in the up shift works. The only odd thing is when the scanner or paper clip are in the up shift light comes on and stays on till I remove them. Is this a sign of a bad ECM ?

It sounds more like some funky wiring problems with the upshift light coming on, rather than the SES light. I'd still change the SES bulb.

Jumping out the test connector don't do either huh? Did you try reseating the big connector on the instrument console? And for that idle, try reseating the connectors for your IAC, TPS and MAP sensors a few times to clean the pins. Jazz might have an idea on this one, give him a yell.

Will try reseating the instrument connector tommorow and the others mentioned the engine is nice and clean like new. Not sure what brought it about just no time to do too much on my own maybe 1 hour in the eve if I am lucky and get out of work before 9 or 10 pm would love to find a good shop to take it to here maybe I can Hire Razorwing I have another ecm from another 85gt comming in next week will try swapping it in and see if any difference.Engine temp gauge reads properly I thought about that too. It will go up about a click or two above a 1/4 on a drive. But thats about as hot as that one ever ran for me even in 2 hour highway rides.

OK the car is officially possessed as I left it sit last night it turns out the code reader was left in the port. I got up early hit a new garage in town explained the car and what I needed done to them. Seemed ok working on a fiero told them I had two and would be looking at bigger jobs soon like the engine swaps. So went back home to get the 85 and stuck in the key noticed the check engine light on looked over pulled the scan tool out and it stated to give its flashes. By now was already late instead of trying to fix it my self again went ahead and took it to that shop making sure ot call back and remind them of the coolant lines since that was a big court fight last time for me
