I saw maryjane's post about ride quality and it got me thinking. My car doesnt ride all that great but the suspension is all in good shape. So, what if i were to do this. Un-bolt the seats, and put a small piece of rubber between the seat track and the floor around the bolt. Kind of like a ruber washer/bushing where the seat mounts to the floor. Im thinking it would be about 1/4" thick.

Is this completly pointless and pretty much a stupid idea? Are there any down sides to this?

Steve

Sort of ,your on the right track but the majority of the ride quality would be in the front and rear shocks and struts, with small inprovements with a new end link set.I have a mechanic friend and he weighs 300lbs,he can easily compress the stedy rider gas shocks and he says KYB are better.A good set of shocks such as KYB can also inprove the ride. The rear struts may look good but can be gassed out,I usually go by milage.Increaseing the spring rate in the front or rear (like with coil overs) can have the opaset effet, too much tension could cause a rough ride....

I won't drive a set of tires past 50K miles anymore and I change the shocks and/or struts at the same time just for that reason. I've found in my experience with cars that over time ride quality deteriorates so gradually that I don't even realize how harsh it is until I have put on the new set of tires and dampers. I made the mistake of running a few sets of tires for more than 50K just because they still had good tread life but I've determined that I just treated myself to many thousands of uncomfortable miles by doing so. I have also been told, by mechanics, that shocks are OK unless they are leaking but I believe that they are worn out long before they leak. An old car with new tires and shocks/struts becomes a pleasure to drive again. I'm sure that body and suspension rubber would benefit from fresh new rubber also but they are usually more trouble to change. I'll bet a whole bunch of our 50K+ Fieros have the original struts and shocks on them.

I would think that rubber under the seat brackets would at best remove some small vibration that might be otherwise transmitted to the seat but if the rubber was soft enough to do any real good it would allow the seat to lean left and right, fore and aft as you start stop, and turn left and right. This would be more annoying, I would think, than the vibration that was eliminated. It would be better, easier, and more useful to add padding to your upholstery.

You didn't say what size tires you have or their profile?

I would be more concerned about the seats ripping from the floor if you were involved in an accident it they are not solidly mounted to the floor.

What about one of those gel filled seat covers anyone try one before? They work great on motorcycles. Maybe the car ones are ok to?
