Took my car in for Emissions today and it failed the idle speed HC test. Its a 2.5L in an 85. It was over by 125. HC during the dyno test has on the line. This car had basically been in storage for 10 years then had some miles put on, then has been sitting in my garage for the last 6 months while I worked on it. The garage wants $99.00 to put it on the diagnostics machine! Could I do the same thing with WinADL. What should I be looking at on WinADL to determine the cause?

Thanks

hi before you spend any money , fill it up with hi octane and fuel injector cleaner and go for a long drive,30-60 miles on expressway, this gets the engine nice and hot , and helps to burn out the old gas and carbon and varnishes in engine, if it has been sitting that long , it needs full oil and filter changes, and fuel filter, and new plugs etc etc,use it daily for couple weeks and then take it there............good luck............

ps check/change o2 sensor and cat conv ................

IAT, or MAT sensor replacement could help too.

If that sensor isn't working right, then the ignition timing could be advanced, ---thus increasing emissions---, HP, and decreasing fuel mileage.

I can't remember if the 84-86 models had an IAT/MAT sensor or not. 88's do, and I think 87's as well.

If you don't, then change the coolant temp sensor. Any GM motor that doesn't have an IAT/MAT uses the coolant temp to determine ignition timing.

Neither my '86 Duke nor my '87 Duke have MAT or IAT sensors. They both have MAP sensors, though.
