Here's my story. I bought it (87 duke) with 87000 miles on it in February. Replaced the timing gears and it ran fine. I replaced the ignition coils and the crank sensor for safe measure as well. I also replaced the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, and MAP sensor
Recently the fuel pump was making an up and down noise and finally it wouldn't start. I applied 12V to the fuel pump terminal and sometimes it would run, sometimes nothing.
I just replaced the fuel pump with a new AC Delco one. I was leaving the store and went to start it....took quite a few cranks to start...about 10 to 15 seconds. I'm driving it home and it just shuts off. I put it in neutral and cranked it about 10 seconds....started back up. I drove it home and now I'm worried about driving it anywhere. Checked for codes and nothing. Applied 12V to the fuel pump terminal and the AC Delco pump purrs nicely.

Any ideas?
thanks
Dave

forgot to add one thing
When I put the new coils on I had the ignition control module tested at autozone. They ran it thru the testing cycle about 5-10 times and it passed

Sounds like the relay for the pump is taking a break due to the long crank time. The (or A reason) cause of it shutting down on the way home, were you at a stop light when it died? If you were the oil pressure must have dipped low enough to shut the pump off. The oil pressure switch controls the pump in the event of a relay failure.

All I can think of since you started up again. The FP relay is one of the two or three by the air filter can.

I was actually in motion driving along the road at 25mph when it shut off....I just popped it in neutral and cranked it to start it again, put it back in drive and went on my way

You mention oil pump switch. I know it is a "backup" to the fuel pump relay. Does the switch send info to the guage, because my guage will sometimes peg to 80psi for no reason. Usually it is at about 40...cold, hot, or at a stoplight

thanks
Dave
