Those of you who swap a Quad 4 in your Fiero, what did you do about getting your engine? I dont think I can afford a complete wrecked car. I have not found one though, but if I can afford one I will get it.

Would it be OK to get the whole engine, tranny, harness, ECM, instrument cluster out of the same vehicle at a junkyard? I will keep my search down to any Quad 4 with a standard, if I get a low output version, it is just a cam swap to the HO model correct?

You don't need the instrument cluster

There is more to the HO version than just cams. At a minimum The HO's also have higher compression pistons (10:1) and a different chip.

Installing a junkyard engine without a rebuild is chancy on any engine and more so on a Quad 4. I'd count on sticking a minimum of $1000 into a junkyard engine for parts and machine work and depending on what you find the cost could easily go to $1500.
