I am fixing the wiring harness for my 84 SE 2.5L fiero. The previous owner was a butcher and cut and spliced many wires very poorly. I have fixed almost everything but it has one wire that I am unsure of what it is for. It comes from the main connector (C500?) of wires through the firewall but ends up not attaching to anything. I would think its for something diagnostic except that it's about a 8 guage wire and its burried really deep in the taped up harness. I circled the wire where it is on the connector and where it is spliced back into itself not connecting to anything else. Whats this for? It is red with a white stripe.
Thanx!

I found a diagram of the c500 in on old thread. But i think it can be different depending on the year of car. http://webpages.charter.net/stuartl/fiero/c500.gif I don't see the wire mine has in this diagram. Im guessing this wire is supose to be +12 volts with a significant load since it is red and 8 guage wire. My car has never had the dome lights/radio/horn work when the ignition was off and im wondering if this could be a power wire for when things are off. Im leaving the last of fixing the wiring harness till tommorow. Hopefully someone can shed some light on this mystery of before I have to finish soldering everything back together. Im tempted to try putting power to this wire and just see what happens

fieroturbo: im not sure what you are looking at. But the things in my picture is the c500 connection right smack in the middle of the engine bay on a 84. And i went ahead and put 12 volts to the mystery wire after checking that it didnt go to the ECM. And sure enough for the first time my dome lights now work when I open the door without key on and the radio dosn't loose its memory! Problem solved. I think I will run the wire straight to the battery with maybe a 30 amp fuse in the line. Sound ok?

Caladin, here's a link to a thread that deals with some fusible link problems on the 84.
I posted a couple pics of the fix I did on mine in that thread.
The 84 has two fusible links that should be attached to the positive battery cable terminal on the starter, I would bet the wire you have should have been attached there.
Thanks fierohoho. There were no fusible links on the startor solinoid on my 84 SE. When i bought the car the owner said she thought the engine was from a later year. So im not even sure if its an 84 really. It uses the 84 distributor cap and the 84 c500 connection but the wiring harness has been cut up alot and its taken me a few days to fix everything up. So i guess now i need to figure out what year the engine really is to see if I must add those fusible links in to be safe.

You would have found the location of those fuseable links in my wife's 84 amusing... I know I did.
Previous owner had killed the first engine, so he swapped in another 84 Duke. While I have to give credit for those links being relocated away from the heat of the catalytic converter during the swap, the new connections weren't exactly made to last. Twisted wire & electrical tape, all jumbled up in a mess on top of the intake, and crimped on to the "batt" line from the alternator at about its mid-point.
Needless to say, I've been doing some re-wiring.
