I've got a rebuilt 2.8 that i'm having a tough time finding an oil filter for. The block must be fairly old as it still has the port on it for the manual fuel pump. None of the filters I've tried will fit the connection on the block. They're all too big. And I've tried all the usual ones for the 2.8. Was there some sort of adaptor used on early blocks to adapt to the usual threaded hole on the regular filters ?

As far as I know, the Valvoline part numbers you should try are, in order of size VO56, V055, and V016. Try a '55 first, but AFAIK the threads are all the same. Hope this helps...

Take a close look at the oil filter threads. You might be able to remove it with a allen head wrench and install one from a newer 2.8.

Sounds like you need to find out what block you have or what it's from, are you sure it's a 2.8?You need an oil filter for that specific vehicle,1985 Pontiac....bla,bla,bla.Do you have the old filter? If you do get the number off the filter and buy the same brand (diffrent manufacturers use diffrent numbers,so you need the same brand). If there is no manufacturer name on the filter we may be able to tell you the possible manufacturer by color.
