Just got my 85gt put back together after installing a new clutch, full gasket treatment, new exhaust and so on. Now I noticed that there was a bit of spark that is arcing from the shield to the head. These are new shields and wires and plugs!! Its not a lot but it would be nice to have that lost enegry going the combustion chamber rather than the side of the engine.

The other thing I've had problems with even before the teardown is RED HOT EXHAUST manifolds. I did some serching through the archives and came to the conclusion that I need a new O2 sensor and EGR valve. I should have just done it when I had it all apart but oh well, i need something to keep me out of trouble. I'll keep evybody posted.....

mike

ps no more oil leaks for me.................whoppie...........

If your idle is high (@1500 rpms or higher) and wont come down, you might have forgotten to connect, or had a vacuum hose disconnect or break. This will cause your exhaust to glow a bright cherry red very quickly.
As for the arcing, try a different set of plug wires. I had the Red set from the Fiero store and they started to arc after 6 months.

Your plug wires are bad. Replace them with a better brand. If they are arcing, they have holes in the insulation.

The plug wires are brand new. What other brand should I try?? I just got the OEM replacement from auto zone.

I put a brand new braided egr tube from the fiero store and its hooked up correctly. I had the plenum off and
there are no leaks, trust me. Idle is 900-1000 rpm with the timing set at 10 degree. What about thr egr
regulator?? Could this be a problem?

Thank you for all the input, and I will not drive it this way untill I get this sorted out.

So in closing, I plan to...
replace the egr valve(it looks old anyway)
new o2 sensor
new plug wies(again)
review the functionability of the egr control thingy??

UPDATE!!!

I went out and ran the car for about 15 minutes. The manifolds did not glow bright res but they had a
hint of redness to them. This became less apperent the longer it ran. Now when I reved the engine
they would start to glow a bit my the exhaust ports leading to the main pipe. EGR regulator seemed
to function properly. I'll have to wait for payday before I can get parts.

hi if you replace the egr and still have a red manifold , there is vaccum leak somewhere , try the cruise control area if you have it, also if you just bought the plug wires, take them back and exchange them for other set or get your money back, always remember to keep reciepts.....................good luck....

You may have to remove the spark plug shields.
I had cleaned up my shields and even pollished them on a high speed wheel. I was so proud but nothing that I could do would stop the arcing so I removed them.
If you figure out a way to keep the shields from arcing, please keep us posted, ok?
