I just bought a 88 GT. I want to put on some 17 or possibly 18 inch wheels. I am sure some of you have already did this. Can you tell me how wide and tall you can go with both sizes without having clearance problems?

I replaced my original tires and wheels with 17"x7" wheels with a 40 mm offset. Front tires are P215/45R17 and front are P235/45R17. I don't know if you can go wider on the rear with a 7" wide rim. You also don't want to go too wide on the front because then your car will track in road grooves (highway).

Also, by putting 7" wheels on the front, you deviate from the engineered change to 6" wide factory wheels which were supposed to help with overall steering. Secondly, they stick out wider than the rear and could look funny with a smaller offset.

Ideally, if you can find 7" for the front, and 8" for the rear of the same wheel, that would give the best look overall - however 7 & 7 isn't bad. Just my $0.02 Cdn - which isn't a whole lot of much.

I have the same setup as James.
17x7, 40mm offset front and rear. 215/45s on the front. 235/45s on the rear. This is on a coupe, but the track width on the GT is the same. I've heard of people going much wider on the rear without any issues, but can't comment on any details.

I have an 88GT with
17x7,38mm and 215-45's on front
17x8,35mm and 255-45's in back
The wheels look stock, dont look like they stick out at all.
I got them from Tire Rack.

Are those ASA AR-1 wheels? Was the 3.5 DOC engine an easy swap?
