I am thinking about swapping out my windshield wiper fluid reservoir (holds a gallon I think) for the smaller one (holds a half gallon I think) that came in the 84 (85 also?) model (to free up a little more room in the front cargo area for more electronic goodies).

How easy can this be done? Is it just a straight plug in? Anyone done this before? Pics? TIA!

Um... well, I decided to just chance it... so I hit the ole junkyard and found 1 of the small reservoirs & pulled it. After a good cleaning, I took out my big reservoir (left the original pump hooked up), put in the "new" old small reservoir, and placed the original pump into it (it fit like a glove), tho I did have to drill a hole into the fender to hold down the front since the bigger one was held down by the jack holder. Tested it out... and it worked just fine. I am so smart... S-M-R-T

Run only water in it for a month or so. Those pumps can start leaking once you mess with them. It doesn't take much on old ones. The stem seal and the pump itself get crabby with age. I just had to replace my pump because a seal failed and leaked out all my fluid. (Took days to leak out...) Pumps are cheap. $15 for one with a "Limited Lifetime waranty" at advance auto. about the same elsewhere.

Living where I have to use my tank allot, a smaller one would drive me nuts. I'd have to fill it couple weeks. I use a couple gallons just in the short winters in DE.

Has anyone thought about moving it out of the trunk in the first place? If I ever convert to flush mount headlights there is nice empty spot where the headlight bucket used to be. On my friebird dash there is a huge empty spot where the passenger airbag used to be, I've thought about there. Any other spots to put the blasted thing other than the trunk?

If you find my advice useful, then please give me a positive rating, thanks...

Technically you could put it anywhere in the vehicle you want.

If you have long lines you will want a check valve in them to keep them full. Maybe two valves depending on the setup. Otherwise it could take the lines a long time to charge before the glass gets sprayed.

You don't even ahve to use a GM tank and pump... Any tank that meets your needs with a 12V pump will work. You'll have to wire it accordingly but the car won't know any dif. You could even add a tank with a level sensor if you wanted. Tho I find those sensors very annoying... most seem to activate, or at least start flashing in corners, at around a 1/2 tank.

Thanks for the heads-up on the leaking. Here it snowy Columbus, I'm sure I use just as much as anybody else who lives in the snowbelt, but I felt the benefit of the little extra room was more important than having to refill more often.

I'm going to change to the smaller one in my 86. I don't think I've even refilled my resevoir yet, and I've had the car for over 2 years! I just about never use it.
