Will an 88 2.5 liter VIN R motor, bolt in direct, replacement for an 84 2.5 liter VIN R?

I don't know the differences in VIN's but the best thing I can say to check is does the 88 motor have a distributer or is it DIS ignition? If it is DIS then it won't work

Right, the 87 and 88 engines are DIS and will NOT work.

The 84 also has a different throttle body and some sensors change. If you have the 84 engine, you should be able to swap anything that doesn't match up when using an 85 or 86 engine.

if its an 88 it should not be a vin r, should it? it should be a vin u, right?

No, all Fiero 2.5's including '88's, are VIN R's.

could the harness be rewired to use a 88 dis inplace of the distributor 2.5 in a 84? I'm putting a 4.9 in my 88 and would like to put the 88 motor in my 84.

I think it would be easier just to change over the entire wiring harness and ECM. You won't need that stuff with the 4.9 anyway.

how about useing a wireharness from a 87 auto parts car to meld a 88 motor with a 5-speed into a 84?
