Hi All,

I've got an '87 GT and I'm trying to change the alternator. I've got the thing unbolted, but I'm having difficulty disconnecting the wiring. There are two connections, one is a small plastic plug, the other is a threaded terminal, neither of which I want to force for fear of breaking one of them because they are old. Any suggestions??

Thanks.

Usually the plugs have a release that you press to remove them, or they are just snapped on. The other connection should be under a rubber cover, all you need to do is to unscrew the bolt to get that wire off. Make sure your battery is disconnected while working on electrical stuff it will save you some grief later.

Yeah I have the plastic one that snaps into place, but I'm afraid that if I try to unsnap it it will break due to the plastic being brittle.

It may break, but probably not. If it does it's not a big deal because you can buy that connector with pigtails at most parts stores for just a few $. I keep a few in my tool box just in case.

I just changed my alternator, and the push-in plug was a little sticky to get out. I used a screwdriver and gently pried it out.

Dude, just rip or cut the wires, chances are your going to have to replace the pigtails anyways and pretty much any auto shop will have the pigtails for them.

Mine was so old that the post broke off when I pulled the plastic out.

Would also suggest redoing the connection to the alternator for the battery. Thats the threaded one, all you need is one of those ring connectors also avaliable at autostore or alternator rebuild/exchange place. If it looks crappy, replace it man.

Ivan.

Dudes,

AWESOME!!! So I used a screwdriver to pry the old connector off, and the other one that was connected with a nut was easy. AND...just as you guys said, my local parts place, which ROCKS THE CASBA, had extra connectors with pigtails. So, PROBLEM SOLVED!! WOO HOO!!! OH YEAH!!! BOO YAAAA!!! SWEET!!

Thanks for your input.
