I just did a search for gas tank size on the forum and came up with one thread. It stated that the gas tank size for 84 - 86 is 10.2 gallons. Well I have a problem. I have an 85 GT. I just filled the car up yesterday, I can drive between 100 - 114 miles and the gas gauge is on 1/4 tank. BTW When you fill it up it only goes too a little above 3/4 tank. around 100 miles the fuel pump starts making really funny noises and gets annoyingly loud. This has scared me everytime into thinking it is really running out of gas. I fill it back up and it only holds maybe 5.5 gallons. I am supposedly just under half a tank but I always stop fill it back up and drive another 100 miles. Any suggestions about this problem. I know the fuel gauge is obviously wrong. But the fuel pump sounding like it is starving is something else.
P.S. And NO I will not take some gas with me until I run out on the side of the road. I do not want to fuel anymore fiero flamers than I have too.

i dont have a pump noise issue, but i routinely buy gas at 1/4 tank. ive never actually had to walk for gas, but i coasted up to the pump a couple of times before i got the hang of my guage.
i put in 6&1/2 - 7&1/2 gallons and click the nozzle a couple of times to top it up.
the tank being long and skinny, if there's any slope at all where you buy gas there may be an air pocket in the end of the tank, and driving down the road there could be a couple of gallons the pump cant get to.
where is decatur?

Decatur is about 30 miles northeast of chattanooga. or about 100 miles due east from you. I think I am going to drop the tank and replace the pump and try the fuel gauge fix I found at fierosails.
Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a similar problem with my V6. The tank shape causes fuel pick-up problems, I think. I've run out twice, and been close a couple more times. At about 140-150 miles it will hesitate when I shift 1-2. The gas surges forward during the shift, and it's just enough to cause a little missing. My gas gauge doesn't work, so I just refuel often and use the trip counter.
I get 20 mpg, and have never been able to use more than about 8 gallons of fuel from the 10 gal tank. Admittedly, I drive in a hilly area : ) . As far as I know, the fuel system hasn't been tampered with. I don't have a clue how the problem could be fixed, but our MR2 Toyota has no problem. I'd check that tank out, but it isn't visible without removing some plastic covers from under the car.

I have had this problem on my 85 coupe. Fill-up and only 3/4 tank. I found that the vent hoses on my tank were pluged. I replaced them with new (read pain in the butt) and all was good. Tank fills up all the way and gauge is correct. Replace the hoses when the tank is off, it couldn't hurt. Just my 2 cents worth.

Going from memory, so be kind In the early V6 they used a flouroelastomer hose in the tank to connect the FP to the pickup, later years they replaced it with a "pulsator" sort of a miniture brake master cylinder looking dohicky that was supposed to cut way down on noise.............Paul

Ever since I replaced my factory fuel pump with a Master brand from Autozone two years ago, I have noticed that it is noiser than the old one. But, I have also noticed that many, of the 2000 and up, GMC/Chevrolet trucks and Suv's have noisy fuel pumps. I wonder if Master is supplying the fuel pumps to these models.

Thanks for all of the input. That is sad they only put a 9.2 gallon tank on the 85's. What is the best fuel pump that you guys can recommend. Should I buy an AC/Delco???
Thanks again

Just an FYI for ya, The 85's gas tank was like a 9,2 gallon tank, The bigger 10 + gallon tank came later in 86 or 87.
??? '84-'86 Fieros came with 10.2 gallon tanks and '87-'88 Fieros came with 11.9 gallon tanks.
I can safely use up about 9 gallons in my convertible (it's an '86, so it has the 10.2 gallontank), although I have been able to put 10 gallons into it on occasion.
I will be upgrading to the bigger tank this summer......the extra 2.5 gallons or so doesn't sound like much, but every bit helps!
What all is involved in putting a bigger tank in? Is it just a drop in or do you have to modify anything? I've wanted to do this for a while... it's an extra 45-60 miles I can drive before refueling!
