what is the widest tire that will go (reasonably) on the stock 14" turbo rims? right now I have 195's, and I think I have seen 215's on these rims? would like to get a little more rubber on the road.

I've got 215/60s on mine, and they are fine. From the looks of it though, I wouldn't go any wider. MAYBE up to 225, but the 235s mentioned before seem like they would be a little big for that wheel.

My dads 84 SE Has P225/60R14 tires on the front and BF Goodwrich Radial T/A P235/60R14's on the back, here is a pic of the front tires installed on the back:
With the 235's there is no possible way that the rims can get scratched, they stick out about 1" from the rims. But look good, way wider than my P185/80R13's
May be off topic slightly, but what about the 14" steel wheels? I think they are 1/2" narrower, I have 195's on there now, and they look like a nice fit, but I would like wider, maybe 215's.
I'd have to agree with Mosh-man. 225s are too wide for the 14" rims. I put some on the back of my 86 and the handling went to crap. put 215s back on and it was fine again.

I forget if those are 6 or 7 inch rims. Measure across the tread of the tire. It shouldnt be more than 1 inch wider than rim at most. Same is whats ideal. For one thing it will cause the tire to bulge out a little in center causing wear there and theres a good possiblity of rolling a tire bead off the rim in a hard turn.
I finaly got around to updating the tire stuff in my cave. It points out some more things to watch for when you mount alternate rubber on a car. (It only covered taller rubber before.)
